Not quite sure what you mean by an 'upgrade'. All the strut has to do is to hold the bonnet open, which the standard one does quite adequately, if in good condition, except when asked to do so in the teeth of a gale.
The standard one is 350N if you want to search for a stronger one, but that should be strong enough.

I got a new Delphi unit on eBay for about £13 I think?

Some people selling second hand BMW ones for that though - seems a false economy to me!

Anyone found an upgrade

i used 2 touring tailgate struts on mine. they're a little too powerful to be honest,
i could do with 2 weak rams really.
i found the standard e30 set-up a bit weak in anything more than a little breeze.

I know what you mean about weak,had the bonnet on the back of the head a good few times.
