Also had fuel leak when I collected from you in May 2014. Interior sometimes smells of Shell Unleaded Petrol. I don't really notice it but my mate who is driving instructor noticed it smelt funny (presuming is petrol)
How many miles have you done to use 6 litres of oil in 6 months?
If it's not leaking then it must be burning it.
5000 miles
Which engine oil do you use :-) ?

You need to start driving normally and then look at your oil consumption
My bet is that your driving style kills the oil

I'm surprised the Scorpion isn't louder, what with 7 litres of oil soaking all the E glass in the resonators!

As long as it meets BMW approval it's fine with me
On the 330i I've been using halfords fully synthetic which meets BMW LL04 spec
At 4 litres for £10 on special offer it's a no brainer so I bought 24 litres of it. I do my oil changes every 6k and it depending on my driving style it uses about a litre of oil every 2-3000 miles.

No baiting from what I can see

Is there a 10w-40 fully synthetic oil out there which I could use. I guess that it would be better then the castrol magnatec I am looking to use which is part synthetic.

The quantum platinum 10/40 I use is full synthetic and meets BMW LL4 its actually made for vw PD engines that are hard on cams. I use it in pretty much everything.jon-m42 wrote:Is there a 10w-40 fully synthetic oil out there which I could use. I am tempted to use this instead of Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 next time
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-a ... &0&cc5_248
Full Synthetic v Semi-synthetic
Respected manufacturer
Same hot protection (ie 40 in this example)
Better cold start and cold weather protection reaching critical engine parts much quicker (ie 5W v 10W)
Is more expensive another £16 as Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 is £20 (unless I go for Castrol Magnetc 5W-40 Full Synthetic which is £25)

The cheapest supermarket special oil that you can find is of a far higher spec. than the oil that the M20 was designed to run on, and if your car's oil consumption is as high as you claim, this what you should be using.

No point using expensive oil when you're just burning/loosing it
But if you want a proper oil, gets some Ester synthetic oil

I was just looking at the specs of Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 (semi synthetic)
A3/B4 etc
http://magnatec.castrol.com/en/oil-rang ... a3/b4.html
Could I use Castrol Edge 10W-60 Full Synthetic which is for exclusive BMW M models only
http://castroledge.com/uk/products/oil-range
The handbook doesn't say anything about what oil grade to use it just has a chart

He's just illustrating the fact that technology in engine oil has come on 100 fold since 1988 or whenever your car was made. So whatever cheap stuff you buy now will still be better than the best that was out then...pony wrote:Which oils was M20 designed for ?Brianmoooore wrote:The cheapest supermarket special oil that you can find is of a far higher spec. than the oil that the M20 was designed to run on, and if your car's oil consumption is as high as you claim, this what you should be using.

So, if the oil then was poor compared to now and we need to change it every 6000 miles, does that mean with better oil today the service interval can be extended?

Moredoor autos with small engines are cool - but my new m20b25 is awesome!

That would depend on what oil you use.. synthetic lasts longer etc. When people say poor then compared to now, I presume they mostly mean during engine operation, not just longevity.
