weve had an e39 535i in the family for well over 14 years now, bought it at 1-2years old S reg,

Cant really beat it tbh! car hasnt caused hardly any expense at all! bar the usual servicing etc currently sitting at 105k,

Only thing which has gone wrong is the ABS Module 001 number, which failed new one is 1k plus however sent it to bba reman for £300 got a refurb one, this unit then sorted out all the dsc, abs lights, transmission failure and no speedo, that a new water pump and a MAF Sensor is literally it.

Apart from that hardly anything maintenance wise, still drives top notch, very very comfortable quiet and refined, and plenty of poke and drama when required!

And to be fair its not that bad on fuel either, when your wafting it...

I just don't believe that a 3.0d is just as juicy as a 3.0 petrol

I average 27mpg
Alan in his 330d gets about 32mpg

On 8000 miles a year fuel costs is identical
On 12,000 miles a year he will save £200

Over 3 years he'll save £600.00

How much is a turbo supplied and fitted these days should his one go ?? More than £600

So, I'll take the lower mpg and live with the extra fuel cost at 12,000 miles PA and not have the worry of the turbo going, nor the diesel pumps, injectors or glow plugs

Old diesels are bad news in my book
That's my way of thinking as well. My Auto averaged 23-24. Hence when I needed to get a touring, I actively sought out a petrol e61. They suffer enough fucking dramas without adding turbos and DPF's into the mix.

Borrowed the bro in laws 120d M Sport and hated it purely on the fact you could tell it was a diesel when sat at the traffic lights. And it just doesn't rev either. Nice car but not for me.

I'll crack on with the e36 then with all the doom mongering you'd not buy any car if you took everything on here at face value off here

True Simon :D

There is no such thing as the perfect car, everybody slates the E39's but I dont have a problem with them TBH, they can be a coont to fix but what isnt nowadays? They certainly drive a hell of a lot better than any VADG shitter thats for sure, if your buying at bottom prices its not the end of the world if it has to be weighed in!
Now, wheres all the E60 550 tourings? :)

Its not as if e30's have only started rusting in recent years is it. That e46 is 14 years old now. I had 14 year old e30 that was fucked out of its brains when it come to rust. Sills, inner arches, boot wells etc.

But its not acceptable for an E46 to get that bad for a so called premium car when many other cars of similar age do not rust like BMWs.

Loads of Audis built at the same time as the E30 lasted really well due to the galved body shells, shame they couldn't make the rest of the car last...

I have a 2000 reg a4, there is no rust on that car what so ever. As a comparison to an e30 rusting, I also had a 14 year old peugeot 405 estate with no rust.

Jon. E46s started rotting at an age long before e30s did at the same age.
I've yet to see pictures of a 5 year old e30 needing new wings.

And that red 46 may well be 14 years old but those front wings did not start rusting last week. They were festeringany many years ago.

The modern stuff is all a bit taxing to be honest. A mate has a 2009 520d manual. With 59k on the clock and religiously serviced by the supplying dealer. Today they are trying to right royally fuck him in the arse for a new dual mass fly and clutch. He's livid. Bought a premium product and expects a premium product. He's told them to think again!!

They don't make them like they used to. And that's a fact.

You won't see an X reg 406 with that sort of nonsense. That POS wants breaking - if it were a 330Ci I'd give 300 quid for it but not a 325iSE with standard grey leatherz. It's weighbridge fodder.

I'm sure there is a parable in the Bible about these.

"Father, I must hunteth for a good BMW E46. "

"Son, they never made one. Don't waste thy time"

"But father, hunteh I must, to quench my yearning for soft feel interior plastics and 50/50 weight distribution"

"Son, they art fu cking rubbish. If it's not as rotten as a carrot it'll have more lights on the dash than a tree of Christmas or will be pissing oil or coolant out. I wouldn't give you a bag of lion shite for one"

18 month later..........

"Father, thou were righteous. E46's are rusty old crap. I couldn't find one that didn't have at least five things wrong with it and an MOT scripture that wasn't performed by Steven Wonder"

"Son, I coulda told thee that 18 months ago"

if i wasn't running my e36 wagon i'd be kicking the wife out of the e46 wagon. Its a brilliant steer, 300bhp helps but theres lots else to like that makes them a good step up from the e36.

I've been through ours and it drives like a 27,000 mile car not 127,000 miles. Its only gripe is its scabby in the usual e46 hot spots and the wheels need a refurb.

Weird, it has the American style headlights with the amber running lights?

You must be a big fan to pay what I can imagine "quite a sum" for a 1.5k miles E39 :D

:) The idea behind the scrap man 'look' was all part of the story:

But do you see an e46 with terminal rust in the boot floors, scuttle, 'jacking points' and inner arches?

Im not a great fan of the e46 though. I had a couple of the m3s in the past and didn't find think that much of them, and of course you have the boot floor issues. My last e46 was a 323ci on a t plate which had a crack bigger than my arse when I sold it. They don't ride that well either, although they do handle well in any guise.

The ride quality of them in sport trim is pretty bad, hence I switched to H&R

Rides better and handles better

As for rust, I've got a small bubble on the rear arch where the bumper meets it, that's it it.

I'll also add the my e39 only had a small rust scab on the rear panel below the boot lid, nothing else

Rust on any car depends on the care that it's had from previous owners
