anyone got any recommendations for an engineering place in or around bristol, and idea of rough cost I should expect to pay for the work below?
I've been recommended Nick Stagg, who I will call next week, but have little experience of the guy. have used country/county? engineering in the past, he was fine but pricey. work to be done:

-block to be checked, rebored and honed, decked 0.8mm
-1mm larger dia small end bushes to be fitted to rods (and mated to pistons)
-everything balanced, crank nose diameter machined down ever so slightly
-assembly of crank and rods with new shells and bolts

what do you reckon then?!
Cheers
Tim

I had a (rough) quote of Ԛ£16 a cylinder for a re-bore.
There is NO nucleus.

there's a place in cardiff that i think can do what your asking about.
cardiff is not too far from bristol,
it's called South Wales Pistons, cant remember thier number now.

ok, the first place i've taken it to have held it for 2 wks and reckon it'll cos them the best part of a grand, but won't give me an exact quote. i was shocked, was expecting Ԛ£500 max!
think its so high as they're barely doing any of the work themselves, but sending it elsewhere for crank to be machined and balancing etc.
on to the next place! he wanted Ԛ£200 for the reboring alone.

all is not lost though, as he's checked the block over properly and in reckons it's a good'un.

yeah mate, cheers, i was thinking about that today actually. i'm going to try a few more places locally, it would just be easier for me to have someone close. but if I can't get anyone, I'll give that chap a buzz. mine does require a big rebore though, not just for oversize pistons, we're talking 2.5mm rebore, so imagine it would be a bit more expensive.
think the breakdown roughly with this chap was:
Ԛ£200 rebore
Ԛ£150-200 sorting small end bushes on rods to fit a 21mm pin rather than a 22mm pin- i thought this was way too much.
Ԛ£200 - crank needs polishing or slight machining on 2 of the journals where it is marked.

and the rest of the Ԛ£400 odd on parts, balancing, labour and modifying crank nose.
latest thinking is rather than entrust the whole lot to someone like him, who wanted to use other people to do a lot of the work anyway (balancing, crank mods etc), to get each bit done in turn - so i'm gonna try a place called ashley engines in bristol next just to get the crank, rods and rebore sorted, then take it from there for the rest.

You could ask Fritz Bitz in Wellington, near Taunton. Think they can do that stuff.

just thought i'd give the latest on this... rang ashley engines in bristol and they were v helpful. Ԛ£13 +vat per rebore, have to do 2 rebores though as its such a big rebore. Small ends approx Ԛ£25 per bush. So looking at Ԛ£200 ish before getting the crank sorted. much better! its going in tomorrow.
