I would have thought the purpose of the engine was to produce the power and the purpose of an exhaust was to vent the exhausted gases as quickly as possible for the performance of said engine.

Exhaust system has several functions
- dispel exhaust gases quickly, efficiently
- disperse heat from exhaust gases
- in road cars - reduce noise
- in road cars - convert harmful gases to less harmful ones
Function 1 dispel exhaust gases quickly
Poorly designed system will reduce power versus a high performance system which will dispel them quicker
So things like I think ? Minimise back pressure
Reduce friction within the system so I don't know maybe want to keep diameter ideally same all the way through the system I don't know
