i have been looking at some spax rsx coilovers, spax are saying that i will need to send my original strut assembly to them so that they can convert it to work with the coilover as the hub needs adapting. is the same for all coilovers on a '90 316?? what coilovers can i get that wont need adapting???

None, as the knuckle is one with the strut tube.
The only way around that is to do a 5 stud conversion using e36 bits and that comes with its own big downsides.
