Was overtaken by a one-owner looking W126 this morning

Yes, a black LHD 1996 W140 S350 on Berlin plates. Bought it in 2003 for £600 with a 'story' behind it.
Outed it within 24 hours for £2500 to a Merc breaker who wanted to ship it complete to Nigeria. 'Ello!'.
It was superb - a black W140 is so Third Reich.

You sure it was a S350?
Edit: Just read its a breaker. It was just odd sending a diesel there if it was used as a running car.

The 350 is a turbo diesel. It went there as a complete running car. Think it was Nigeria but it was one of the corrupt African shitholes that favour the biggest Benz.

Do you need the mineral riches of a medium-sized Africa nation at your disposal to pay the running costs of can they be run fairly 'cheaply'?

Costs peanuts to run for the 2 years I've had it (I SORN it over winter). I get 26mpg on a run (it's a 88MY 265bhp 500SE). It goes pretty ferociously, faster than I expected, partly as they 'only' weigh 1650kg and this one has 405NM of torque. Had some great road trips with friends to Wales x2
I would only swap it for a 600 SWB

You can't really go wrong, even a £1k rough one if running will be a great banger barge but if you properly covet one a £4k one is all you need for a pretty perfect example. Alot more rot resistant than an E30, save the trap at the front of the front wings. Check bumper chromes too, but they are available at not a ridiculous price from MB.

..an early one has definitely been on the shopping list for a while.. Just need to find a longer lock up, I've got a drive now so worst comes to the worst can go down the banger route and keep it in the open air. I'm used to E12 and E24 bumper corner prices so can't be shocked anymore

The achiles heel of a W126 is the parcel shelf under the rear screen...visible from under the screen area in the boot...
The rubbber window seals perish allowing water in and thus rot out the whole area.... There arent very many W126's that would not have suffered from some rot there....
Epic cars and seriously cool with some AMG bits nailed on....

It is metallic, although looking again, that may be the other metallic green MB did as it looks darker. Thistle green is like BMW Reseda green - starts off well but fades like buggery under the lacquer.

Good point on the beam under the parcel shelf and rear screen support. The SECs tend to be worse affected possibly due to the steeper rake on the rear screen. I looked at five cars when buying mine, and two had rot there despite looking mint externally. The repair is doable and the panel available but obviously nice to avoid!

Dunno, the W126 saloon hasn't aged well but the SEC still looks amazing. The price difference between the saloon and the SEC makes it a no brainer.
The saloon needs to be a dark colour with the flat face alloys. The one above looks like a big 190E.

..nowt at the moment, hopefully by Spring next year should have enough spare for a decent(ish) one. My compact just had it's first ever failure to proceed this evening (suspected fuel pump), I don't think that's enough to put it into early retirement yet though

I'll tell you what else is worth buying now, and that's a really nice pre facelift W124 230CE or 300CE, aroundf the F/G/H plate and preferable 12v for the 300CE. A nice example with the correct wheels etc is such a handsome beast and prices cannot stay low forever. Rusty front wings are common, but they're the same as the 124 saloon and are cheap enough new.
The facelift ones are nasty though.

..yep, got them on alert too

Although a W123 is a nice thing, I think they're a bit played out like the Citroen DS, Air Cooled Vee Dubs etc. Next generation Merc FTW
