so my 1989 316 auto is needing a new engine as the old one did not like its cam belt and it snapped last night. there is a e46 with a m43 in it at the scrape yard. runs fine he wants £125 for the engine and box(is the box usable). has any one done it before if so how hard is it.
sorry for asking so many nob questions its my first e30.

Should be doable, but it certainly won't be straight forward. It would be easier (and cheaper in the long run) to get another M40 and drop that in.

Better than an M40 but IMO its not worth the effort/expense of fitting it

There are decent/trusted traders on here who will have good M40s.
It will be a lot of work to fit an M43 for not much benefit.

Would be similar cost to do an M44, but much more beneficial

don't really want to go down the m40 route as i hated it before it shredded it timing belt. have been in a m43 e46 and it felt plenty quick enough for what i want as don't want stupid power. plus the idea of using the m43 is there are all ways plenty of them in the scrappy to rob for bits.

If you did fit the M43, what sump would you use?

Having briefly looked at using an M43, I know which I'd rather do...DanThe wrote:Would be similar cost to do an M44, but much more beneficial
At a guess an M40 sump, that's what I used on my M44.DanThe wrote:If you did fit the M43, what sump would you use?

yer sump wise thats what i was going to do. was looking at the m44 but if vosa or the police ever pull me it would be easy for them to work out i was running a diff-rant engine as with a m43 it looks fairly similar to the old m40

Vosa and police won't give a fuck as long as it's declared to your insurance.

I doubt a M43 will fit as it has counter balance shafts which are housed in a unit with the oil pump at the back of the engine so a M40 sump won't fit.
