According to the documents that came with my car it suggests it had remote central locking as an optional extra. I presume it's BMW and not a dealer added aftermarket solution.

But either way, the was no key fob when I got the car.

Is there anyway to find if anything is installed, perhaps scan for radio waves??? and re-program a fob?

If it's a OE option, then there will be a siren box under the bonnet, with a keyhole for turning it off. There was a genuine BMW unit available, plus a couple of BMW approved alternatives from other manufacturers.

Not noticed a siren, I'll have to investigate further. But there is a 3.5mm jack socket in the steering column cowl below the ignition. I imagine that has something to do with it. Interesting enough the other 93 touring I have as a breaker has exactly the same jack socket but I assume it's not factory?

The jack will be an immobiliser only. IIRC., the 'key' is just a jack plug fitted with a resistor across the pins. If the car works without a jack fitted, then it's almost certainly disconnected.
I've seen these before, and removed them on sight. Aftermarket tat, AFAIK.

Yeah, key works without any kind of jack so disconnected long ago no doubt. Interesting that both cars I have the exact same aftermarket set up fitted, I guess it was a popular option at the time?

So when I get the chance I'll take a look at the loom and see if there's any remnants left in. I hate botched looms.

But if an aftermarket immobilizer has been fitted that would suggest to me that there's other security device fitted?

So what's the best way to get remote locking?

They are very good - I've fitted several.
All the connection points you need to fit it are behind the glovebox area. (Which is also where any aftermarket alarm/immobiliser or the control module for any OE one is likely to be.)

ive got the long thin oblong light grey remote central locking fob fitted to my 92 325 cab. still works perfectly. think this is original kit, it has the siren and other bits already mentioned above, annoying though if you get in and dont start the engine in less than 30 seconds it rearms and you have to lock and unlock the car again to start it, primitive technology.
