Notice on the mats above, there are only 2 (two) turn button eyelets.
My car (86 325i Cab) has 3 turn buttons fixed into the original carpet, so any carpet set for mine would have to have 3 turn button eyelets. I have the original carpet set still in my car, the coarse (country?) style, which has the plastic heel pad. So the above set would not fit mine, as the carpet would be riding over the turn button up by the brake pedal.
Also the turn button & eyelet are a matching set, so any eyelets put into carpets you are proposing to have made MUST mate perfectly with the original turn buttons.

What colour are people calling this carpet, Anthracite, Dark grey or Black? It has a silver sheen in the sunlight.

Cheers

Poverty spec or not the original carpet set had a plastic pad moulded onto the carpet. Notice third turn button.Problem with the vinyl pads is they scratch in no time, deform and look poverty spec, ugh proper naaaasty.

@minesapint - The eyelets will line up as they are made to fit an E30. If they are a little off you just reposition the lock pins - they are only big plastic screws set into the carpet / foam underneath.

Yes that's correct.diable wrote:Two (2) towards the seat and one (1) by the pedal box?
The mats in the BMW accessories brochure 1991 shown above have only (2) eyelets, was my point here.
Ratch
If the turn buttons have to start being moved you end up with holes in the carpet & the backing broken up.The eyelets will line up as they are made to fit an E30. If they are a little off you just reposition the lock pins - they are only big plastic screws set into the carpet / foam underneath.
I didn't have to move mine when I bought the original mats.

They'll fit. That's why I'm supplying an original Mat set to ensure their templates are spot on.

Do you have an original mat set for the Cabriolet, & are the mat sets for the Cab going to be made as Cab originals, as they are narrower (front) & smaller (rear), as you know.
If you can confirm this, & when I get an answer to the colour question, I'd be interested in a set.
Cheers
Mines a pint, your carpet is shaffer which is slate grey and the darkest factory carpet you get for an E30.
They are also known as black but obviously not.

One question, apologies I haven't gone through all the previous posts.. are we able to get the mat clamps/fixings? They are NLA from the dealers.. so ordering the mats with the holes in them may cause problems

The anthracite / black thing is confusing. There is no black carpet in an E30 - just a very dark grey - anthracite. Schiefer is the mid / light grey. I could be mistaken.
CAD files drawn up - just need to measure a real heelpad to ensure precision then I will submit this to the mould makers for final estimate. About mats, I'm going to visit them to look at exactly what they have and what they can or can't do.

You want me to do all of this just to get you 'interested' lol.minesapint wrote:That's great.Royalratch wrote:They'll fit. That's why I'm supplying an original Mat set to ensure their templates are spot on.

Dudes. I'm doing all this in my own time. Chasing up samples, checking templates, sorting mould accuracy bla bla bla. Lets chill on the requests for a bit and get one set made and assess the quality. We'll go from there on who wants what when I know EXACTLY what can be done. Its good to know theres 'some' interest - not nearly enough to really make it easy but as I said I'm not in it for the money.
I will hopefully get 1 sample in Indigo next week. I'm away for 2 weeks after that then when I get back I may have some heelpad samples so I'd expect orders can only be taken after Xmas.
I'm pretty sure the low quality rough carpet you're all showing in your pics, with the thick tram lining across it will not be available. It will be the soft lux carpet only. They do have a cheaper carpet but I doubt it will look like anything that came in an E30.
Next week I should have some pix. I need a set of mats off Barry / Simon in the meantime. All 4.
I have just skipped the whole thread, I would be interested In a few sets depending on price?

that cad work looks spot on! it looks like the correct font, but if you used a similar font and need the type in the actual bmw font drop me an email and i will send you an .eps
btw, i always kept a pilot and learjet handy to take me to my colombian hideout getaway should the BMW enforcers come knocking about using their old logo which has been out of use since 2000 ;)

Cheers Pukar.
The BMW font is some special weight of Helvetica I assume. The captions at the bottom are Antique Olive.
Some news on progress. I have tracked down the actual matt supplier that made the E30 mats for BMW and still makes their current range - and yes they are West German. The chat was quite funny as it was 5 minutes talking about my requests and 15 minutes talking about how BMW are bastards lol.
Anyway. That supplier said they 'probably' have a good match for Anthracite, Light Grey and Beige - but no Indigo. They also have that horrible rough seagrass ribbed carpet that you guys are throwing up. But not sure in what colours.
My other contact here in the UK has a good premium velour Indigo match along with Anthracite and Grey but Beige not sure about. They don't have the coarse ribbed stuff.
Both can do the woven edging. The Germans will require an order of 150 sets
to make a custom colour (Indigo). Probably not a goer.
I'm still trying to finesse who can deliver what and in what finish. I may also have to find someone to attach the heel pad to the mats afterward. Will see.
One thing I need some clarity on - when you guys say 'City Mat' are you talking about the rough ribbed style mat? Or is that the plusher mat? Because to be honest I'm only interested in sourcing / figuring out one kind of carpet - the plusher premium type.

Cheers dude - I already have the official artwork too. But the CAD guy has to draw from scratch and so not sure vector art is that useful to him.

Here is the Indigo sample. Its a pretty good match for colour and the quality is very good. The rubber backing is quality too - with the correct locking pins they should be a decent set.

For Indigo the leatherette edging is bang on for the leather / vinyl of the interior. I'll ask about woven edging but this is way harder wearing and looks nicer I think. Dodgy iPhone white balance is screwing with the colours but its very very good in ze fleisch.

From what I've learnt this past week, the heelpad will be the easiest thing to make. Getting the colours, edging and lock pin detailing all accurate will be harder. Zoners may have to accept some historically inaccurate details but these will easily be the best aftermarkets for an E30.

Is the backing already on the sample? And how does the height of the fibres compare to the original? They look a little short to me.....(i.e the mat will end up being quite thin).
