If there wasn't a link, I wouldn't be asking! (Same power source). If you want your problem solved, I need to know for sure.

How about the windows and/or roof, assuming they are electrically operated?

Now we're getting somewhere!
If you were sceptical about a connection between the heater fan and the mirrors, you're not going to believe this at all - the problem is to do with the starter motor.
Have these items that aren't working ever worked since the engine change?
Is the engine change complete?
What, exactly, has happened to the C101? A straight engine change should normally only involve unplugging the C101 from the old engine loom and plugging in the C101 of the new loom.

Yes the change is complete its a 330d engine from a E46

What, exactly, has happened to the C101?

it was chopped off a 318 loom and all the wires require to get the car started connected.

Not that i know of the windows seem to only work when the door is open.

There is a black/green wire connected to pin 15 of the C101, which needs to be connected to the starter motor.
On an E30, there is a dedicated terminal on the motor assembly for this wire, which I doubt is present on a 330d starter, so connect it to the inner large solenoid terminal - the one that just has a link or braid between the solenoid and the motor itself.

After reading this

Does that pin need a ground/earth

Second post in that thread says exactly the same as I do - " it should be connected to starter terminal 30h.". This is fine, if your 330d motor has a terminal 30h, but if it doesn't, connect it to where I said, which is electrically the same.
The 'earth' referred to is via the windings of the starter motor.

I'm having a similar problem, my heater fan will only start if I turn it all the way to 4, after that it works fine, it has stopped working once though, that was solved by switching it from off to 4 a few times.
any ideas as to why this might be happening?

That is actually a very different problem.

The details are in the wiki. http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Heating
