Hey guys. A friend at work has picked himself up an E30, a minter of a 318i and although hes keeping it standard and doesnt want to ruin its original charm, he does fancy a chip. Maurice doesnt do standard 318 chips, only 318is. Anyone know where we could find one for his car?

True, but if you can get 8-10 more bhp out if for cheap why not?German-Whips wrote:Performance and 318i don't belong in the same sentence!

There are no gains to be had. Spending the money on fixing something is much more effective.

There are MINOR gains to be had, but 8 - 10 bhp is cloud cuckoo land, UNLESS the injectors on the car in question are so down in flow and there are assorted minor inlet air leaks, that the mixture is so lean that power is seriously reduced.
'Chips' from less than reputable sources, along with things like the infamous ebay resistor, exploit this by upping the fuelling rate to crudely compensate.
Of course, if a 'chip' like this is fitted to an engine in decent condition, it will just result in increased fuel consumption.
The answer, of course is to invest £46 into having the injectors rebuilt, and to deal with the air leaks.

Most chips speedtouch offers give 8-12bhp gains, so one might assume similar gains could be had from a 318 But as usual on e30zone, ask and you shall be mocked.
Appreciate the input however, it would seem chipping it is a waste of time and will be better waiting to put a bigger motor in further down the line. As for fixing things, as of yet there is nothing to fix. Full BMW service history etc, thing is an absolute peach.

as mentioned clean injectors and no air leaks is the best way to regain some horses and simple things like good spark plugs and new filters. or if you really want the haters to chip in TURBO!

80k on a 20-25 year old engine means either lots of sitting around perishing, or lots of idling in city traffic. That leads to lots of coke buildup and/or sticky injectors, so getting them rebuilt is probably a good idea.
Beyond that, if your mate wants more power then dropping in an M42 is a much better option than trying to mod the existing lump.
