Is 160k on a 325i g/box gonna be asking for trouble or are they pretty bullet proof?

My other tourings box has done 200k+ and feels good!

change the oil before you fit it!

I've a 325 Touring box in daily use that's done 250,000 miles. Rattles like a bag of nails at idle, but apart from that - perfect.

my sport gearbox chatters at idle and did on 66k when i first bought it. ATF fluid

You mean it chatters, ' cause it's got ATF in it, or putting ATF in it will cure it?

my sport box has 164k on it... a lot of it on big torque and hard abuse

The box I'm talking about towed a largeish caravan 2000 miles around Europe last summer.

His chaters because of the release baring (i think) because at 66k i dont think his clutch has been changed. But ATF does make it chatter a bit more. I have ATF and its not much different from the 260 boxes.
