I read the wiki on fixing the door lock, but I have one question that wasn't very clear.

If my door doesn't have a hole do I need to cut one?

As its a four door, save yourself lots of grief and wounds and remove the window and regulator. 10 mins extra work which will save you lots of time/skin/language :)

^ what pete said. With the mechanism out of the way, you just reach in through the biggest hole at the bottom of the door.

Great, thanks chaps. I wondered if that would give enough access and I really didn't fancy taking the tin snips to it.

The glass guide bar that's in your way is made in two pieces. Undo the single bolt that locates the bottom of the guide, pull it down slightly (let the rubber slide in the channel) and it will unhook just below glass level, allowing you to swing it forwards and up out of the way.
No need to remove the glass itself - make a tapered wooden wedge to push in between the rubber weather seal and the glass, or loop a piece of duct tape over the top of the door, stuck to the glass each side.
