Finally I am writing up a road trip I did with the BMW Car Club in May 2014. This was the Welsh Weekend. I had been looking forwards to this road trip for a few months. I think I booked it in February or March. I had an exam which I passed a few days before the road trip in April 2014 so this was something I was MASSIVELY looking forwards to and kept me going.

In 2013, I did this road trip in E46 M3 CS and the trip was absolutely amazing best road trip ever. I did a write up ....
http://forums.m3cutters.co.uk/showthread.php?t=79223
I wanted to do it in a different vehicle in 2014.

Having been driving E36 316i SE 3 Series Compact for a few months since March 2014 (Thanks PacerPete) I was eagerly looking forwards to the resurrection of the E30 325i Sport with all the mechanicals finished.

A few photographs of the E36 316i SE 3 Series Compact

Image

Image

I collected a few parts from BMW Park Lane which i had ordered for the Sport:
- BMW Service Booklet
- Fuse box lid
- Illuminated M-Technic gear knob
- Pedal rubbers (brake pedal and clutch pedal)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

So I sold the Compact on the Friday and Pacer gave me a lift to collect the Sport!!!! I tell you I missed the Sport BIG TIME!!!! I collected the Sport and the parts I bought were fitted upon collection. The vehicle needed an 4 wheel alignment check which I had to myself as bss325i didn't get time to do this so this would have to be done next day (Saturday) the day the road trip would start.

As I was driving home the Sport didn't feel anywhere near as good to drive as I had hoped / imagined. The steering was all whack as needed an alignment check. Sounded alright though a˜Š.

Five minutes before home somehow this happened ....

Image

Image

I was getting a bit worried and feared I would not be able to make the road trip and possibly have to take a different vehicle which I didn't want. So I called RAC and they recovered me did a temp fix and said was ok to drive home.

The next day I woke up bright and early and borrowed my old man's E46 323Ci (FBMWSH) and made a trip to ECP HQ in Wembley to buy some new parts to get the Sport fixed.

New Lemforder track rods

Image

Steering wheel cover to protect New Genuine BMW E30 M3 Sport Evolution steering wheel

Image

Image

Parts bought went home and took the Sport to a local tyre fitter where I got the track rods fitted, 4 KDS wheel alignment by Hunter machine

Image

Image

Image

Image

So after that last minute heart stopper with the new track rods and wheel alignment I thought the Sport was fine. As I departed for Wales via PacerPete I noticed a wheel vibration quite severely at 50mph ish. Luckily I was not too far along the motorway to return quickly to the tyre fitter and they were open. Maybe a weight came loose when the wheel was vibrating when the nut came off and track rod was bent
That's the only thing I can think of

Retuned back to the tyre fitter all the wheel balanced. Job jobbed as Pacer would say. I departed again and there were a couple of things which stopped working since I collected the Sport the day before which Pacer said he would sort for me:
- speedo fixed (with some old parts)
- handbrake light fixed which required connection adjustment under the handbrake cover and was simple fix
- electric sunroof was only working when a door was open. Was actually missing a relay in the fuse box which was like that since I had it
- Pacer took it for a test drive and gave the thumbs up so reassured me
- all tyre pressures were low so inflated to correct tyre pressures
Cheers Pacer!!!!

I was at Pacer's for 2 hours and left 7pm. Now was a race against time to get to the hotel in Wales for the BMW Car Club shin dig / dinner (which is at 7:30pm). I called up the hotel to say I would be running late and to keep my dinner! Sat Nav on Apple iPhone says 4.5 hour drive

Last year I got from London to Wales in. Llandrindod Wells in 3 hours I think in the E46 M3 CS. I even had a little play with Aston Martin V8 Vantage S. And I just made it in time for the main course and what a drive!!!!

Ok so I was on the motorway and driving the Sport and it felt MUCH better after the 4 wheel alignment. I thought the steering had a bit too much play and the brakes felt a bit too spongey (when compared to CS) but Pacer assured me was fine. Under braking mainly at motorway speeds there was a vibration via the brake pedal.

Anyway as I was driving the Sport I was slowly gaining confidence and getting used to how the Sport drives again. My main worry was getting there in one piece without anymore mechanical hiccups.

Quick pitstop somewhere in England. This is at Cannock.
First full up
Think I am in England
I am 2.5 hours / 108 miles away from destination
No idea how much fuel left in the tank but I have done 160 miles on the first tank and just filled up as do not want to run out of fuel at Harvest Energy. I was going to find Shell but was taking ages

Image

Unleaded petrol £58 / 44 litres

Image

Then I carried on with the journey Wales-bound. Did an "indicated" 130mph in the Sport innit. I did get lost I think trying to find the hotel in Aberswayth, Wales but eventually found it. I think I arrived 11:16pm and in one piece with no mechanical hiccups. Arrived in one piece and parked next to E46 M3 CSL.

Image

Having the BMW Car Club dinner in my hotel room as I was late. Did say hello to the chairman David Frith and a couple of members. Couple of tasty birds in the car club.

To be continued :-)

Nice track rod end fitterzzz! :o

There is a shell garage a mile down the same road which is cheaper, looks like you got bummed on the toll road! They inflate the fuel price as its the only garage between the toll/m6 and the m54

Any pics of the 'tasty birds' ?? :D

Yes at low speed near where I live. The front wheels were not pointed in same direction. Both track rods were rusty so good to replace both. Anyway all sorted :-)

Lucky there mate you were driving slow. That's quite odd that a nut should just undo and come off like that. When/where was it last serviced ??

Very silly question Jimbo - BMW Park Lane OEM, genuine parts only, of course.

BMW Car Club Road Trip in May 2014 continued :-)

My comments on the drive from London to Wales
I feel a lot more confident with the E30
I was probably just a bit worried about something falling off
I did indicated 130mph
I get held up last half hour mind you I was nearly falling asleep
Straining on the eyes and the lighting from e30 front lights are not bright
I got overtaken by E46 318Ci shame on me in the Welsh roads
Straight drive here
1 fuel stop
And 5 minute rest at the fuel stop to eat some chocolates
Indicated 130mph @6000rpm

The following morning after breakfast I noticed that loads of people in their BMW Car Club gear I left mine at home

Pacer's comments lol
We need pics of the freak show !!! Especially the Hush Puppies, slacks, camel toes and car club clobber !
BSS comments lol
Bet there are lots of Z4 and Z3 losers

Anyway after breakfast I had a wonder in the car park to see what other BMWs and other vehicles there were:

The E30 325i Sport parked next to E46 M3 CSL :-)

Very unusual for a TRE to pull out of the steering arm, even with a nut missing - they normally need to be whacked with a hammer or a joint splitter used to get them out. :?

There needs to be a zone roam round the north wales hills IMO, we did a meet up at Denbigh about 5 years ago and it was a good crack, I think the wrong roads were chosen TBH as we hit lots of tourist traffic, on the A5 especially, but with a bit of planning it could be made much better, there are enough decent A and B roads to keep a bunch of E30's amused :D

BMW Car Club Road Trip in May 2014 continued :-)
Part 3

A promenade display was organised by the BMW Car Club to allow all the BMWs to displays on the promenade of Aberswayth, Wales. This had permission from the local council. At the hotel car park we were all split up in groups of 3s and led by a "pace car" driven by the BMW Car Club birds.

The pace car was a Mini Paceman driven by the BMW CC admin birds. Brand new lent by BMW Rybrook.

I arrived at the promenade behind pace car they lead u in formation. This thing (The Sport) fucking roars!!!!

Pacer wanted me to take lots of freak pics.
"We need lots of freak pics, any thing you think looks normal / good should do ! NO E46 M3 PICS WE HAVE ENOUGH !!!!!"

The weather was good. There we had several hours to relax check the other BMWs and explore the local attractions of Aberswayth and get some lunch.

Love this thread.

Couldn't help noticing in the first carpark pics, that the BMW Car Club people can't park for toffee, including the Pone! Also, that tech 1 320i cabby (with the incorrectly positioned badge) has a really horrible boot spoiler on it, but I guess all can be forgiven for the stunning walnut interior..... :?

BMW Car Club Road Trip in May 2014 continued :-)
Part 4

Having enjoyed several hours at the Aberswayth it was time for us all to leave in convoy and drive back to the hotel which was just a short drive away. Was tremendous fun driving the Sport. Serious council activity in the Sport reverberating everywhere.

Other Car Club members commented on the sound. One even said he could smell petrol in the exhaust fumes from 1-2 car lengths behind go figure ?!

Arrived back at the hotel and then quickly topped up with petrol at a local petrol station.

Unleaded petrol £30 / 23 litres

Image

Image

Had a short stop at the hotel there and then we all set off on designated road trip encompassing some local sights.

I did notice that alot of these BMWCC members had badges in the wrong place or non BMW Dealer number plates. I am shocked at the amount of council number plates. Council extra badges being added on. And incorrect positioning of badges. I thought this was BMW Car Club. Not Southall Car Club.

Image

As we were on the road trip in the lovely Welsh country in convoy I noticed that some of these old boys in E30 320i Convertibles were driving proper slow.

The other BMWs on this road trip were: 3x E46 M3s with CSL bits
1x E46 M3 CSL
1x E36 M3
1x E31 840Ci Sport 2 Owners from New 55k mileage P Registration
There are quite a few Z3s
Z3 M Roadster
2x Z4 M Coupes
1x Z4 M Roadster
1x E92 M3 with AP Racing brakes
E30 M3 with 250bhp 2.5 litre inline four
E28 M5 (belongs to Keith Bridges - BMW Dealer Williams Parts Guy - 3 Owners from New - 170k mileage)
X5 M
E92 3 Series Coupe
750iL E38 council
2x E30 320i Convertibles driven by old boys proper slow
I asked why they didn't get 325i ? They said 320i is more reliable!!!!
125i Convertible
E46 330Ci Coupe which had Hartge and Sport badge even though was Coupe.

This Z4 Coupe 3.0 is virtually concours and the engine looks as good as brand new virtually. Notice the Coupe badge.

Image

Image

Image

Image

There were alot of old people here. The old guy in the E30 M3 from Bromley uses BM Sport / Bexley Motor Works
250bhp. Owned since 2001
He was giving it some in his car
Scorpion exhaust. I am not sure how much quicker his car is than mine. He got a young man heart because he was giving his E30 M3 some real action.

Image

Image

The road trip we were all in a massive convoy in the country side going around a dam. The views were spectacular. The drive was quite slow. There was a brief pit stop at the local cafe to enjoy the views of the dam by everyone.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

After a short rest at the cafe we all set off lead by David Frith in his BMW Car Club 5 Series GT. I made sure to tuck up right behind him. The idea was to keep up with him and give him the hurry up so the whole pace of the convoy is much faster. And guess what ? It worked. All the slow drivers got left behind and besides David in the "pace car" leading the way there were 5 others including myself
E30 325i Sport
Z4 M Coupe
125i Convertible
E28 M5
E30 M3 with 250bhp

I was up his arse giving him the Michael Schumacher hurry up!!!!

I was on pole position :-)
Innit.

Regular stops were taken along the way to take some souvenir photographs :-)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The next stop led by David Frith with the other five drivers was at a quarry. And what a sight!! To think and imagine all the people that once worked here. The sights and sounds and how important it was to the local economy. Plenty of slate was there. I think I brought some as a souvenir :-)

Image

Image

Image

The Sport in pole position. Innit :-)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Slate from the quarry :-)

Image

This is copied and pasted from a text which is why the language isn't all posh.

I was giving it large dropping back and hammering the red line. Everyone could hear my exhaust even the car 2 cars behind!!!! I was raping my 325i everywhere. I was right up David Frith's arse giving him the hurry up
BMW Power
325i innit

David did leave me on the part of the road where was really bumpy in 5 Series GT 535d. Was such a fun drive.

The car behind me the Z4 M Coupe was surprised how quick mine go. And let's face it Z4 M Coupe would eat me for breakfast. I was backing everyone up
All 3 M cars and 125i convertible
Then I banged all the gears and got right up David Frith arse. Michael Schumacher stylee :-). Then repeat :-)
He (David) was quick (quicker than me) through the really bumpy bits
Everyone else got left behind
I got behind David so we can go fast

Then we arrived back at the hotel 1-2 hours which the drive took. I felt it should be longer I was enjoying it so much. The reverb was amazing from the Sport. Back at the hotel car park we were all chatting how much we enjoyed the drive. The Z4 M Coupe driver behind me was surprised at the pace of the Sport and that's coming from a Z4 M Coupe driver with 343bhp. He also commented as did other drivers that they could hear the magnificent Sport soundtrack :-) !!!!

Pacer's comments
"You must have looked like a right cock, you were in good company !
Any sad single bitches looking to be sprayed with jizz / puss ?"
LOL

I had some dinner at the hotel with some of the other members. I was with a Concours Z4 Coupe 3.0 litre driver and the E30 M3 driver. I was telling the Coupe driver about that non-OEM "Coupe" badge and persuading him to get Z4 M Coupe. He did comment and suggest that the M badge on front grille of the Sport is "council" (as Zoners would say) and non original as isn't M car!!!!

The Cheek!!!! I told him is Dealer fit accessory option

Pacer comments on Concours
Concours types are proper freaks with major issues, even by your standards ! Innit

Having really enjoyed the drive in the country roads these are my thoughts on the Sport on that drive.

The Sport had a very nice turn in for corners. Even on those shit kumho / hankook tyres grips really well in the corners. Very nice turn in. Feels really nice in the corners like on rails. Road conditions were dry. Had a nice balance. The tyre pressures were set correctly and I think they can make a difference to the handling and the balance. The ride is a bit hard. Has brand new New Genuine BMW M-Technic springs / Bilstein B6 Sport shock absorbers. E30 M3 eccentric / concentric ?! front wishbone bushes which apparently help "feel". Powerflex rear bushes all round at the rear. I thought the ride is a bit hard possibly explained by the Powerflex bushes in the rear. When I go over cats eyes is quite hard ride and also when driving on a different colour tarmac which has higher friction coefficient to increase grip for braking is very bumpy there.

I am surprised by the lack of original total OEM BMWs here

PS
Forgot to mention in the previous part I got talking to a Car Club woman who had just bought a brand new / nearly new BMW E93 320d Park Lane BMW Individual Estoril Blue. And why not fair play! And good on her for joining the Car Club.
She was creaming herself over her 1000 mile 63 plate 320d
Very nice BMW
But is 320d

I also got talking with David Frith nice chap has 8 cars. He was telling me about his 1000 mile 316i compact. And I am like but is a fuckung compact. Then I told him I hate compacts!!!!

Also some of the people last yr came this yr they were asking about the CS. Well they assumed I came in it. Till I told them I didn't.

Pacer one of your council BMWs would have been ok and wouldn't have looked out of place here

To be continued :-)

Daimlerman went to the BMW Car Club Welsh Weekend in May 2013 NOT May 2014 as I have previously said.
