Im still after a 316 autobox 4 speed carb, 1986 (4 hp-22) but I have been told the same box is fitted to the 318!
Any one know if this is true?,and can I get away without using the kick-down ,mine is cable but some are electronic. Cheers.

4 hp-22 that sounds like a 325 gearbox.

It does sound like a good time for you to do a engine swap with gearbox to go with it winkeye

As far as I know all 4hp22 boxes are ZF.

My old 325 box was a ZF 4hp22 EH. The EH mean electronic/ switchable.

Hi again Martauto

About the kickdown: My autobox gave up a few weeks ago and I needed to replace it. I thought it was a non switchable (non-electronic) as there was no computer in boot and no switch next to selector lever.

With the box out I saw that there was an electrical connector on the box (behind selector seal I think - facing backwards). So this was indeed an electronic controlled box. I guess a previous owner also replaced the auto with wrong box.

Anyway, the old box worked fine with 'normal' kickdown. What you should maybe look at is the kickdown cable of the electronic box. Pull on it and see if there is a resistance at the end of the pull, before you go to kickdown (sorry, bad explanation), like a non switchable has. My electronic did indeed have this 'normal' kickdown resistance and it worked fine without the electronics, but then maybe it was modified somehow?

Just make sure the kickdown switch/stopper beneath the accelerator pedal is set correctly.

Hope this helps. If there's anything else I'd love the chance to try and explain from my experience (Maybe something good can come from my ordeal :) )

According to my car's manual the 316, 318i and 325i autoboxes have identical ratios in all gears, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The torque converter will probably be a different size (You should have seen the huge difference between my old 320i TC and the new 325i TC!!), so try to use your old one if possible to avoid stall speed problems etc.

But I guess you're more worried about whether the belhousings are the same between the 4 and 6 cylinders. Sorry can't help there. Maybe you should do a search on the forum about bellhousing sizes on manual boxes between the different engines. If they are the same on manuals, they should be the same on auto's. Otherwise start a new thread asking about manual boxes fitting between different engines.

Can get 325 auto switchable boxes for you, but check out your car details at BMW before you start spending money as plugs can sometimes be different...
