How did you remove and test without dis-connecting the electrical connection?
There's two wires to the pump,one green/violet,one brown....reverse them,pump runs,but does not deliver.

That plug only goes on one way dude, can't put it on backwards.
Plus like I said, it ran for 20 minutes since I returned it...

Try whacking the fuel pump with a rubber mallet or similar. Also try another dose of carb/brake cleaner down the throttle body while you crank it over, to draw fuel through.

I did this. Can try again.
If there's power to all the places it's needed and there's spark - it can only be 1 or 2 things.

You could try swapping back to the original ECU again.
Or, as suggested above, whip the lid off it (Torx screws) and take a gander inside to see if anything is fried....

You have a duff fuel pump, whatever your bench test says.

I like the confidence Brain - 'ave it!
Ahem.
However, a new pump isn't chump change for something that might be at fault.
I'll test the FPR and pull the fuel line again.
I should add you usually hear the pump whizzing at Ignition 2 but this isn't happening anymore.

It's very easy to test a fuel pump without taking it out of the car.
Try pulling the fuel hose before the fuel filter, and dumping it into a jar. Crank the engine.
If there's no fuel, wire a test bulb in line with the fuel pump relay and crank the engine. Does it glow?
If the bulb glows, the problem is at the pump. Get access to it, unplug it and wire in the test bulb. Crank the engine.
If the bulb glows, your pump is goosed.

That may well be the case, but have they changed the fuel filter recently? Quite often, these get conveniently overlooked, as they are 'out of sight, out of mind'.

Nobody has yet suggested powering up the pump with 12v whilst it's in the car. This will at least get fuel to the injector rail. Have you tested the injectors for a pulse with a multi meter? 318iS ECU's used to fail on one cylinder when a diode would fry but rarely the whole thing.
Does the car have a BMW alarm or immobiliser? These used to work by cutting power to the fuel pump.

I was thinking to try the same thing Andyboy. I removed the relic of an old install many years ago..,
@Soeedtouch - I service it and I always do all the filters.

I'm with Brian.
Fuel pump issues, a direct 12v supply on the bench can be stronger that what the car is providing, it is also performed with the pump at a different angle.
These things stick when they stop, give it a bash and see what happens. If you can get someone to gently bonk it with a rubber mallet while cranking.
Edit - You said you pulled the fuel hose and nothing came out right?
Did you crank it with the hose off the filter and still nothing?
Seems pretty conclusive to me.

But the way around you connect the wires is important.

Sorry dude - Mac OSX auto complete is mad hyperactive!
Is the motor the only thing to go wrong with the pump - or should I replace the whole lot to be sure?

Pump and motor are one integrated unit. There are three things that commonly go wrong with it, but which of the two that actually stop it working has happened to yours is irrelevant, since it's not repairable.
The frame it fits in is just a metal bracket and tubes. Absolutely no point in replacing that.

I am pretty sure the terminals are wider on the positive than the negative, so as long as you don't change the terminals then its hard to get them on the wrong way around.
