In brief. 325i se I am just putting this car back on the road.

I was trying to resolve why another E30 (that I have) boot wouldn't open and so looked at my current E30 mechanism, however when I shut it the key failed to come out.
I eventually and rather heart stopping-ly managed to turn it to the right and remove the key.

The button won't go in or out, just won't budge. It's stuck in the in position.
Now the key goes in either direction like nothing is engaging.

I had removed the central locking units so that's not going to help!
The battery isn't in the car but it won't make any difference anyway (although I can put a battery under the bonnet and wire it up to get the car going).

I have considered;
1) removing the ski hole and then undoing the boot hinge bolts (I still won't be able to reach the rear of the lock area),
2) drilling an appropriate hole in the rear from the outside (after possibly removing number plate and black plastic trim in that area) to access the right bit!
3) Considering cutting through the spare tyre area (!) and then getting it welded back in place! Yep it's getting that desperate !

The other E30 is rusty (and just sold), but that boot I can access a bit sue to the rust holes, the new owner and I had a good go at the lock components that we can access and still no luck!

I can't recall the right way to move the various components!

My trusty Bentley's manual sadly doesn't cover this.
Can you help please ? :)

You could sacrifice a tail light to get in you know...

Having said that, you have loaded it with WD40 haven't you? Same happened to me once I loaded it with WD and spent ages messing trying to "flick' it back out and eventually it popped out and was fine ever after!
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

If the WD40 doesn't work, just knock the ski hatch out, and throw a ten year old child through the hole with a 10mm spanner to undo the two bolts that hold the catch to the boot lid.

If you dont have easy access to a willing 10 year old, smashing a rear light is easyest

Large screwdriver in the lock and big hammer. It will break the lock and pop the boot. Done this years ago, new secondhand lock and key and job jobbed

Thanks for the various ideas! :)
I have debated about the light cluster too but a good reminder ty. :)
I wonder with the ski hole punched in if I could get a really long tool to undo the light cluster nuts - humm hao long would it be I wonder and what angle ?

Sadly no lil children who might squeeze past the tyre (ontop of spare wheel!) nor a person with really long arms nor a robot either ! :(

Really hope not to break the lock!
I did wonder if I drilled the back of the metal plate out I might then be able to punch the lock back out. Really annoyingly I was going to push it back out before shutting but was distracted with a visitor and just shut it! :(

I did wonder if some circlip pliers might get in 'enough' to hold it and then pull and with all the oil might work!?

Your option 2 is viable.
You say you have a second E30? If so, you should be able to work out where to drill from this. Only needs to be about a 4mm hole.

:) It was the other one that I was already trying to resolve, that led me to manage to shut my fully working boot in such a way, that I managed to mess it up!
However I have had some success! :)

On the other 325 (C reg) which has now been sold and left today, I managed to get the boot open!
Through the rusty holes of the numberplate lights I managed to get a socket onto the two 10mm barrel unit nuts and undo them so that the barrel unit was released. This then popped the boot open ! :)
I think the barrel had lost contact with the release bar!

I took a host of photos! Which I might upload (& put on you tube), in case anyone else gets into hot water with this!
So this now helps me ...

As on my G reg E30 I can now remove the ski hole and try and reach these two bolts. If I can't it will be difficult. But I hope I will be able to and then it should release the boot and then I can try and diagnose what went wrong! :) So this week I hope to sort this out! :) Cross fingers and toes! :)

:) yeah some long extensions or a long arm! :)
Actually I don't understand where I'd drill ...
I had fairly large gaps from the outgoing E30 (325) and the release latch seemed to have (possibly) gone to the right of the barrel. But it was getting the nuts undone that did it.
I'm not sure where I'd drill though... to hit the release catch ? Because normally I think that ought to be behind the button. The rest of the latch (to the near-side of barrel) wasn't budging with much bigger holes. The hanging down wire (for the central locking unit - not currently installed sadly) didn't seem to do anything when I was playing about with it - or maybe it needed a lot more uumph?
I'll try and load some images once I've reduced their size!
