Intake pipe to stock air filter housing fits into a cut out in the removeable panel that blanks off the back of the headlamps.

Well, that's where it goes on every E30 I've ever seen!!! Or does it?
Got a feeling the air intake was on the right on carb models, so maybe someone has fitted a headlamp back panel from one of these,
Lower right hand quarter should be missing.

The difference will be how quickly your engine wears out.
How many standard air filters can you buy for the cost of a K&N?
Stick with the OE filters and change them often.

No, they're not THAT bad, but in the real world don't filter as well as the OE element, and you can buy several OE filters for the price of a K&N.

But in both cases you mention nothing of performance.. there must be some gain there even if it is small

And the M3 doesn't have the cutout either, it takes the feed from the side of the rad.

Clean OE element will flow every bit as well as a K & N.
If it didn't then BMW would have fitted a better one.
You need to realise that these cars were designed and built by engineers, not accountants, to a very high standard, not to a price.
BMW is aworld away from bean counter designed rubbish like F**d, Va****ll, etc.

Couldn't agree more, the BMW air intake system is very well designed, the only restriction being the AFM.
Stick with the standard airbox unless you can get a hold of a well designed heat shield that only allows intake from the front of the car.

Well ive done a complete turn around here and im 99% sure ive got better performance now with the stock air box in :S

Might be completley imagining it but ive drove it twice now sicne i changed it yesterdat urban and M-way and im allmost positive which is great.

Miss the sound but thats about it... M-way is when your get the most rewarding gain out of a cone cuz your allmost forcing nice cold air through it as long as its got a good feed but from normal cruising im sure this is better like i said..

TBH i WAS thinking of sticking a upmarket Panel filter in there but not to sure now, maybe just a new OE one like you say as i just used the one that was still in the box, looked fine though but you never no

When I first had my 325i, I went out and bought a pipercross induction kit for it, thought it was the dogs danglies at the time (this was pre zone!) and I was still quite young! The car was due a service, and because I was servicing it at the dealers, I put the original airbox back on and noticed the difference straight away, suffice to say I never put the induction kit back on, it went on e-bay instead and it went quite nicely on there
