Quick answer needed, should an 1986 325 I
Cab have the secondary lock on the drivers side door, or did
they not all have them?
Thanks all.

Only if they had the alarm package Rob, many do (and never work) some don't.

Happily, mine doesn't!

I think they always had the red pinlight below the rear number plate too Rob, in the package. They still got stolen in their millions despite the high tech security, only on the introduction of the Subaru WRX moredoor did that subside, which happily coincided with all the BMW alarms packing up! :D

It's an ill wind Paul. :D

I was more concerned with the Cab in question being original tbh.

Neither of my cabs. have either the extra lock on the door or the light on the boot.
This 'high tec.' security feature, the CODE immobiliser, the standard BMW immobiliser fitted to other models, and the majority of aftermarket immobilisers are, and always have been, defeated in seconds by the a three foot length of wire with a crocodile clip on each end attached under the bonnet.

The answer is yes.
In 86 the only Cabs were 325's & they came with the additional magnetic door lock as standard for the security alarm.

Hmmm.
Can't seem to find a definitive answer to this.
Had a look on Realoem and the locks seemed to be available from 1984 onwards but
doesn't state if they were standard or an option.
I know my old '86 325i cab came with the magnetic lock and the small red light on the back end,
Then again, Paul's didn't.

I'll dig the options list out tomorrow Rob that shows it as an extra. Don't forget this comes from an era when absolutely everything was an extra, radio preparation, electric front windows, hub caps, all extras, high tech alarms were not standard!

The 325i Cab didn't come out until 86, (in RHD form) so don't know why you're looking at 84 specs.
My 86 325i Cab which I bought new in Aug 86 came with the alarm & electric windows as standard, there's no doubt about that, I have the sales invoice for it. It is NOT an extra.

Ok, dug out the model price lists from 85, 86, Feb87 & Sep87.
This is Feb 87 price list

RHS column is 325i convertible. Second block down is...Factory fitted options (Safety Equipment). 5th row down is...Anti theft device = Factory fitted as standard.

The other equipment factory fitted as standard is: from the top

Anti theft device
5 speed overdrive gearbox
PAS
Electric windows front & rear
Green tinted glass
Sports steering wheel (including leather gear knob)
Alloy wheels

Further, if there are any 86/87 Cabs without the magnetic door lock on them, then they are not original.

Outstanding Cab you have there and the fact you've had it from new is fabulous - has to be one of my favourite cabs out there and the way the car still looks today is a clear credit to you and testament to the care its had lavished on it :-) Thanks for those photos. Hope you are well. Kind Regards, Russell.

I wasn't looking for 84 spec Cabs, I was comparing the specific
part number across all BMW models.
Thanks for your help, very nice original Cab you have there.

Have just dug out the catalogues that I have, and can see that an "anti theft device" was listed as standard on 320i and 325i models in the 80's, and seems to have been dropped as a standard option from 1990 onwards. Oddly though, the pictures in the brochures during this period don't show any of the convertibles with the key insert in the drivers door.

An explanation to this might be that the standard anti theft device was not common to all markets, and I do suspect that BMW just reversed the pics in the brochures, and photoshopped UK plates on the car to produce the UK brochure.

Also, like hardtop preparation, which was standard on UK cars, I do get quite a few customers here for hardtops without this present. I suspect that the cars were personal imports, and even as RHD, they didn't include the full UK spec. This may explain why some 320i and 325i cars don't have the extra lock?

:)

Lovely car btw Stephen!

I now have the VIN number of the car I am interested in, and armed with
this will be visiting the local dealership for the build spec.
Tbh, if the car in question is now missing it's original magnetic lock, or even the door itself, I
won't be too fussed. I still have an 86 cab door complete with the secondary lock, albeit
in a different hue.
I,m more concerned about how it came to have it's original door removed, if indeed it has.

Yes agree with the above. It is quite confusing.

The picture below is from the 85 brochure & is clearly a reversed negative, as no filler cap on drivers side & aerial position is always LHS of car. So LHD car. No Magnetic lock.

Image

The picture below is from the 86 brochure & looks to be genuine RHD from filler cap on this side. No magnetic lock.

Image

The picture below is same 86 brochure, but if RHD the steering wheel & raised binnacle would be visible, so think a doctored photo. No magnetic lock.

Image

And here's the proof, same photo from the 85 brochure before plate changed.

Image

It's interesting if confusing, but we are agreed the UK 86 cars had the magnetic lock for anti theft device as standard regardless of what these pictures show.

There are still people who believe the photos from the Apollo 11 moon landing are doctored & none of it happened!

Cheers

As said on another thread, your car is outstanding minesapint but one thing that would massively improve the under bonnet appearance is losing that Bosch battery for a white BMW battery.

I really couldn't remember what the original battery was like.

Cheers I'll look into that. Stephen
