I recently had one in at work, a fair few wiring gremlins. Horrible turd.

And a week later came in with a seized caliper.

In other words, no less reliable than any other 10-15 year old car. They're not bad cars at all. Very strong and a lot of the floor and underpinnings have gone into the XF. They're not that good looking imo but they ride well, don't seem to rot badly and best of all, they're worth the square root of fukck all. 3 litre manual is a good shout. A grand should buy a decent one and I've seen some really mint ones make well under 2 grand at auction.

Chap I know had an early one and as far I know didn't get any specific grief from it. However, last year he upgraded it too a late model one which proceeded to rape his wallet, got fed up with the increasing bills and sold it on.

As my touring has finally died,and I am now officially retired,I bought myself this today;

65k miles,and everything appears to work...so far....

3 litre with manual 'box, rides well but corners like a sofa on wheels when compared to an E30.Proper 'old man's' chariot! :D

Setting the tyre pressures correctly has improved the ride/steering no end,and the aircon really did just 'need a re-gas' to work correctly!

Rog,you is just jealous! :D

To be honest,Rob,I have not had time/energy/oppotunity to change the engine oil/filter,yet,never mind hunt up a leather interior.
I have managed to get the ridiculess 'sports' exhaust back boxes swapped for a pair of proper one's,though, the A17 is bad enough without the drone the thing was making!

Bungalow is progressing well,I've put a few photo's up in Pub Chat this afternoon, hoping to move end of this month/early November.

Leather can be easily retrofitted and why would you want a spazbox if you like driving ?

This is bangernomics at its best - for what malc paid what's the alternative ? A ropey e39 520i with cloth and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree ?

Auto-box is known for shitting it's self at around 100k,see posts above.

Manual is Getrag sourced,so is bullet proof.Auto-box cars demand a premium, manual is un-loved and therefore cheap...and I prefer to be in control of the gearbox, auto's have a strange habit of wanting to swap cogs going round roundabouts, just when you need to keep the powa on...

Cloth over leather?

OK.I would have prefered leather, but the cloth is un-worn,bar a fag burn(why do people smoke?)on the front passenger seat.

All in all,I have bought a big,old car for beer money.Unlike E30's,which are starting to rise in value, these things are still bumping along at the bottom of the market, give them 6/12 months, let a few more be fragged, and values will stabilise and then rise for the few good 'en's like mine...well...that's the theory! :D

Rear bushes, according to Jaguar, are only available as a complete wishbone...at silly money.
British Racing Green have developed a replacement that can be pressed in,also fits XJ6,for £50.I also understand that Polybush have developed a replacement that will be in three parts,so will be a simple DiY replacement.

Mine,at 14yo and 66k miles,is un-marked by rot!

Fair enough,a single big replacement bill will have me doing the maths, but a year or so's use will see me break even.

As Capri-rob says else-where,it's another turd ticked off my personal 'must have' list, and a little more sensable than a Maserarti! :D

Needed a new windscreen this week

However, the nice lady at Saga(yes, now I am officialy retired they were the cheapest at £150-02 for the year!)sent a man with a van to fit a nice new one this week for an exess payment of just £75.

The fitter told me that the 'screens retail at £1550,or twice what I paid for the car,but then went on to tell me that S Type's were built from Ford Mondao bits....

It's still running well, doing about 300 miles a week at an average of 32mpg,only problem is that the traction control light and the ABS lights are on all the time,I think this is most likely to be a rear ABS sensor, but would welcome any useful advice.

I have also convinced DVLA to 'allow' me to transfer my cherished plate from the touring!

Seen here resting in it's new home, that carport is 6m long,it's a big beast!

I am too honest to claim that one,Rob.... :D

But I did check the pillars for the harness for next time! :D

Regarding running costs,I filled it at Sainsbury's Kings Lynn last Monday morning,it ran into N Norfolk and did short trips all week, home to Lincoln Thursday afternoon,Rotherham/Nottingham/Lincoln today...303 miles for 10.33 gallons,or 29.9mpg.Most of today it was 4 up..
Happy at that,a long motorway trip at 70/80mph will probably show 30+.

Threw a curved ball at me mid-week.

Turning into the drive at 'the project',the power steering felt 'off'...popped the bonnet to find the surpentine drivebelt soaked in coolant.
Traced the leak to the top hose,a tiny, perhaps 2mm bore pipe leading to what looks like a bleed valve had blown out of the top hose.

The guy working on the extension roof came for a nosey as the bonnet was up and found me some superglue in his van,it's holding...so far...but I have a new old stock hose on it's way from blackcountryjaguar.co.uk to do a proper job.

Reference my post above...

Replacement top hose arrived on Tuesday and I got around to fitting it yesterday evening.Top hose runs from the top of the radiator to a gadget of some sort on the n/s front of the block and has a feed off it to the l/h cylinder head and another pipe coming into the underside of it,as well as the bleed pipe exit that had failed.
The part that was broken(that I did a bodge on last week)is a rigid spigot pipe and is a known weak spot in the system. So,four jubilee clips to remove and transfer to the new hose.I found the broken part of the bleed spigot part-way down the bloody bleed hose, and it was a proper bugger to extract without mangling the hose...two jubilee clips would have found a new home in the bin if I had been working at home with a drawer full of replacements available, but went back together eventually.

Now there is just the faulty rear ABS sensor to track down and fix! :D
