A question for those that have the rare climate control setup in their E30. Does it automatically activate/deactivate A/C to attain the desired temperature like in a modern climate control system, or are you still required to switch this on and off manually?

It's called temperature regulation on an E30 and I have it and it the A/C remains on. Every BMW i know of with climate old and new has no control over the A/C, just the temperature control and direction flaps.

The A/C compressor will always cut in and out automatically when the pressure reaches is limit or drops.

Thanks bss. I've just got the standard heater in mine at the moment but I'm looking to upgrade to the factory A/C. The reason for my question is because I also have a temperature regulation heater without A/C knocking about. It is complete with servos, wiring, temp sensor and controls. In theory then, if I were to pick up a used factory A/C kit, I could convert it to automatic temperature regulation using the parts from my 'spare' heater, since it has no control over the A/C function anyway. Correct?

You can't do that. As the heater boxes are physically different. So you can't fit auto climate to an A/C box. I've tried it before

If you want both then its the rarest combo by a country mile on E30's so your in a for a wait.

ive got air conditioning and climate control on my 325. the air con works with the climate control set to minimum and the fan can be left to its own devices. the climate control i think is just a more accurate temperature mixing device, i assume when the standard system you adjust as the temp goes up in the car and turn it down, the climate auto regulates the car temp to your interior temp so you never get a variation during a journey. given it was quite a primitive set up in the late 80's im not sure how much is show and how much is go. if you cant be bothered turning the fan down its a n answer to a question nobody asked.
