I have finally got my mitts on a nice E plate 320 2 door  and all being well i will pick her up next weekend :P

but the road test at night showed up a worrying thing for me...... the dipped beams are like a pair of candels 8O and theres lots of country lanes round here so this is not good,

my scirocco is suposed to have crap headlamps but they are far superior to the bm's eaven with 55W efforts in (used to have 100W's but 1 blew and my gaffer advised me to fit legal ones or he would fail it on its impending mot)

so in short a hid conversion is out because of sheer cost and if a bulb blows i understand they dont come cheap either. So is my best bet to up the wattage again or are there other light units that i could transplant that give a better beam?

Before you start modifying things you should find out what's wromg with the lights . BMW projectors aren't quite the best lights out there, but in full working order, and correctly adjusted, they should be adequate at least.
Why do you want dip beams on country lanes anyway?

for when theres a car coming the other way

still need to see the road, so the uprated bulbs will be going in, i might stick a pair of 100w jobbys in the mains and if it comes to it i have no problem making a relayed heavy duty headlamp loom to reduce the voltage drop 8)

this 320 has no front fogs but not bothered about that (last 2 cars have had them and hardly use the things) they are no real benefit as driving lights
