Ticking noise, EVAP?

Done my m52 swap, had it all running but after it was sat running on idle for a while it developed a tapping noise. I've been told it can be down to the EVAP purge system? On the e36 it plugs into a canister. What do people do about this on a e30

Pipe into the inlet plenum has to be blanked off, but I can't see what this has to do with any tapping noise.
I'd be checking that you have the heater pipes the right way around.
