Well, it could have been ordered new with the hardtop, but as with many of the items on the extras list, the extras were dealer fitted.

An example is, radio preparation was factory fitted, but the radio itself, although ordered on the same sheet, was dealer fitted.

Yeah on the spec sheet from new it shows hard top preparation.

All UK cars had Hardtop preparation as standard spec, unlike German cars, and oddly, UK buyers hardly bought hardtops, whereas it was quite common for a German car to have a hardtop.

My theory is that BMW put the hardtop prep in UK cars, and added the price to the standard car, to help with the development costs. The UK buyers were always quite heavy on the extras list, which BMW loved.
