Swapping cogs in a 2 tonne wagon is pretty much pointless IMO, the 5 speed auto box is great, shove it into manual if you like, ive heard tales that some rally/offroad types are using them with a sequential type shifter kit attached

e34 saloon isn't 2 ton though is it, each to their own. I get bored with the lack of ultimate control that a manual gives. I don't do alot of town driving and i'll plod in an auto when i'm 50.

I heard that also Dan, apparently also with steering wheel paddles from a more modern BM wired into the Auto shifter manual switches. Sounds a cool idea.

Your right Nick, the biggest pain and i'm not normally put off by it is the distance. Its nearly 600 miles. So its a flight there and a fair bit in fuel to get back.

Did you drive the 540 hard? You hear mixed reports on the boxes, but i'm not an animal

Pony i'm not sure i'm quite ready for those running costs at the moment.

It was my daily so was driven normally 90% of the time. Couldn't help but abuse it some of the time though and I broke the box racing a Subaru. I was so skint at the time I had no choice but to sell it, otherwise I would have sourced a new box.

Pretty much although you need to have a twin stage air bag for it to work as the round air bag fitted to post E46 M3's is twin stage.

And then a couple of wires run from the slip ring plug down to the =/- gear selector switch.

Someone did a plug and play kit but it was expensive.

Alpina software you say Barry?

Well Alpina EGS (auto transmission) software is different as is the part number for the gearbox itself for cars with switchtronic.

Someone out there must be able to program that software onto the standard EGS unit.

If anyone is interested i spoke to the owner last night, hes just retired from running said boozer and has moved to southampton area now a few months ago. The car has up till then spent its entire life in the wokingham area so no northern salty road action. He bought it off the original owner with 145,000 on it in 2008 so hes not racked up the milege in his time. Its been looked after by munich motors ( who were the first to get an S54 in an E30 in the UK running?)

Everything is working he says, i've realised i don't need 3 alpina tourings and for some strange reason still don't want to part with my e36 even after 3 years with it.

I've seen this in the flesh and would wager its a good um and the owner is a genuine guy

Don't waste your money on that. It's just a bigger slower version of the two Alpina tourings you already have!

The red M5 is having a lure today. I wonder if i can last 1 week without spending any of it.

The E39 is tickling me still also, could replace the trusty e36 potentially. Lots on here have had e39 dailys and in touring pina flavour with 6 pots and a manual shift makes it ripe for daily work

But what does it really do that a £1500 530i wagon can't? It's nice but not really very special. It's just another E39 really, another depreciating overweight source of electrical maladies.

like the e30 you mean? Your point is valid, but the B10 has a hand built bullet proof engine iron block its nearly as quick as a 540i plus your other niceties like the colour, wheels spoiler, suspension. It has alot more about it than say a 530i m sport. You can't go wrong at the price imo

Ok another scenario is sell some cars and save and buy a e36 B8 alpina. Bryn P off here has a saloon one forsale which i could stretch to. Its got a stonking V8 check, manual check, massive performance check. It must be close to a Bi turbo with 350lbs

And stroll about in my £50 iX wagon for daily stuff

If it has to be a 39' swerve the 3.3 B10 for the B10v8 I have had both, they are worlds apart,
the 3.3 is a very disappointing slug in comparison to the 4.6 and the alpina slush box isn't to be sniffed at, the performance is just incredible.. sadly so is the MPG

And that's why I reckon the 3.3 B10 is the perfect daily for Si. Better fuel consumption, Smaller bills and he gets something modern called a steering rack over a steering box. Apparently they invented them some time ago

That was the theory I had when I was going for 530's. 6 pot economy over an 8's, smaller servicing bills and shaper handling. The only thing you don't get is an 8's soundtrack.

And that B10 trumps a ratty 530 sport all day long for me. And a ratty sport is all you'll get for £1500. I've know 4 sell now. All nice cars with sensible mileage and all made over 3 bags.
