Hi.
I have a 325i 1990 Manual.
I get the feeling that something is rattling in my drive line.
When I am in 4th gear, the gearstick will start to rattle quite a bit and as soon as you press the clutch in it stops. This does not seem to happen much in other gears but only in 4th.
A while ago during a inspection for general faults - my Mechanic had said the Shifter link is rubbing on the Driveshaft, however I got under the car and in every different gear, it is not rubbing or does not make contact, i tried to feel it and I cant feel any rough parts or scuff marks on the underside.
Would appreciate any Feedback.
Thanks.
Gearknob rattle in 4th.

E30's have an overdrive gearbox,so direct drive in 4th....not too sure if this is significant or not!
Most gear lever woes are caused by wear in the linkage, there is a good article in the zone wiki that is probably titled 'Short shift conversion' or similar, this describes how to dismantle the linkage and lists the parts that wear.

If you've already been told that the linkage is touching the driveshaft, then this is probably what's happening. Would certainly explain why it only happens in one gear.
Sorting out the wear in the linkage will likely sort the problem, as per daimlerman, but the part of the driveshaft that's making contact is most likely to be the vibration damper that's fitted around the rubber guibo (coupling). This damper serves no purpose with any guibo that's in use today, was not fitted to any BMWs after the E30, and can be totally removed with no ill effects.

It has allready been converted to a short shifter and is using the DSSR Link, everything is very tight in the way it shifts not much slack. I was thinking i could have a worn out Guibo.
Could it be unbalanced clutch or flywheel?
I will try to check out a few things

Guibo damper removed or not?
Changes the picture somewhat now we know there's aftermarket tat involved (I notice the UUC spiel only compares with the early E30 joint, not the greatly improved later one), so the vibrating lever could well be some resonance being transmitted and amplified by it.
