Apologies for another question on fuel guages guys but I'm struggling to find a new 55litre tank for my IS and can get a new 62 litre one no problem.
I know I have to fit an additional sender unit from a 325 in the "extra" hole on the tank and i believe change or fix the fuel guage.
The question is can my original guage be fixed in situ, with a bit of soldering etc or do I have to replace it with one from a 325.?
If so Do I just change over the guage or do I have to source a complete 325 cluster?
Never had to fix, replace or remove acluster before on any of my E30's in the past. Just been lucky I guess....
I would prefer to keep my original cluster if possible

Cluster on an E30 can be removed in a few minutes, and is easily dismantled once out. You do not need to remove the steering wheel.
Your existing gauge can't be modified, and will need to be replaced by the correct one, but it just plugs in to the main circuit board, secured by a single small nut on the back of the cluster case.

Thanks Brian,
I'm glad that means I dont have to change the whole cluster.
Do you know if new guages are still available from BMW? and also the sender unit?

I think I have an old sender unit somewhere that I took out of a breaker, as I wanted the pump at the time, and I still have the top assembly with the fuel pipes etc.
Do you know if this sender would be ok to use on the other side of the tank. I would obviously cut, if needed, and block of the pipes. Think i read somewhere that the wiring plug is the same on both sides.
Would this work

Sender for the LH side is electrically the same as the RH one (less low level switch), but is a one piece assembly that twists straight into the tank, rather than slots into the pump unit. The hole in the tank is the same fitting, so I suppose IF the units are physically the same length it might work.
Never compared the two that closely side by side, and I'm 300 miles from home at the moment, so can't check.
AFAIK, new gauges are still available, but there's no shortage of perfect second hand ones, and several on here who have 62 litre gauges but need a 55 litre one.
You must move the return fuel pipe from the engine from your fuel pump to the stub on the side of a 62 litre tank, or you will end up with effectively a 40 litre tank.

I will dig out the old unit and I will remove the second unit from my 325 and compare the 2 and see if they are similar in length over the weekend and check to see if this would work.
Yes I read the post elsewhere on the repositioning of the fuel return pipe and I will have to block off the return stub on the pump housing as well.
Thanks Brian, even though your on holiday your still providing help and advice. A proper hero :-)

I will let you know how I get on with the sender unit.

New fuel gauges are available from BMW,I think it was 'hennaBMW' who posted recently regarding buying one...but it was the European spec type with litre markings rather than the UK specific with quarter markings!
