Yes I know they rust and have mondeo underpinnings but it's an itch that will soon need to be scratched

Anyone had one ?

I'm quite ok with it having ford bits as the mondeo I had with the same engine was a cracking turd. Is the suspension a complex pain in the ass ?

the suspension is the same as your Mondeo, unless you want the AWD!

A mate of mine came to collect his AWD x type the other day, chains through the windows and lifted onto the flat bed with the trusty hiab arm :)

I had one - A 2007 2.0D Estate. I spent nearly 2 grand on it in the 2 years I had it.

Mostly the bits that went wrong were the Ford engine, but I did have to have lots of work done on the suspension too.

The suspension isn't complex, but it is a heavy car and it goes through shocks and bushes at an alarming rate. If you're doing the work yourself though it probably won't cost you a fortune.

I did notice from the Jaguar forums that the guys on there either had absolutely no trouble with their car and could run up huge mileages, or the cars were absolute lemons. There didn't seem to be any middle ground. Mine fell into the latter category.

Most of the problems were with the Ford Diesel engine. It seems they'll all need a modified crankshaft pulley at some point, so make sure that's been done (pig of job to do at home apparently).

Mine also had a leaky waterpump, replacement injectors & seals, the thermostat went and the EGR failed. 18" Aruba alloys look really nice, but from what I gather, they all crack without exception, so avoid any car with those. Fortunately mine had the BBS Valencia wheels.

It also had a rusty patch on the front wheel arch (there was a batch of 2007 cars where they apparently didn't paint that area ) and nasty vinyl around the gearstick and handbrake - the kind you would expect to see on a MK3 Cortina and tears in the same way and looks awful.

This was all between 4-6 years old on a car with less than 80,000 miles.

If you get into an Audi or BMW of the same age after being in the Jag it just feels like you're sitting in something from the 90's.The only good things about it were the seats were very good on a long drive, and a lot of people still immediately think that because it's a Jag you've paid £20K for it, no matter how old it is. I also did like the way it looked.

Here's the one I had

I would really think hard before you buy one though.

I like the way they look and am struggling for inspiration for anything else for my next daily. Audi are overpriced for what they are and e46s just don't interest me at all after my last one. The sensible part of my brain is telling me to buy a Honda accord estate as it will be far better built than most other turds but good as they are the jag is a much better looking car for the same sort of dosh. The mondeo tdci I had for 2 years was trouble free and the engine was great it's suspension and bodywork I struggle with normally

I find it kinda ironic that after years of Jaguar unreliability and rust, they start to use Ford and it's the Ford parts that are the issues and the cars still rust  Sounds like they can't win.

I have to say Rob. I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole but it appears you've made your mind up. Go buy and report back. It'll make great reading if you prove us wrong. :D

Trying to get through a few different marques - within the last 12 months I've had Volvo, alfa Romeo and now honda all of which were firsts for me. Still need to pop my jag cherry.

Whatever I get will probably only be on my drive for 6-9 months anyway :D

IMO the S type with a 3 litre engine and manual 'box would be a better buy, finding one with a decent LPG conversion would be a bonus.

X types are known to rust, those plastic sill covers are often 'structural'....

If it's a wagon that you need,E39 may well be a better buy.

Not a fan of Rover at all so I'll pass on that one thanks for the suggestion though

Malc a mate at work has the 3.0 s type but with the auto box quite a nice car but I can't get on with the styling. I get why they styled them like that but they're a bit too old mans car for me even if I am getting on a bit.

As for rust BMW haven't exactly got an unmarked scorecard ! If I wanted something to be pretty much guaranteed to be rust free id buy a vauxhall !

E39 wagon is a non starter. Too bloody big and nice as dans is they look better in saloon flavour IMO. I'd quite like a saloon but again it would have to be a 3.0 or bigger to do it justice and that's just a non starter from an economy point of view. No point in me paying to LPG it because I won't own it long enough.

The accord estate is another definite contender as they are well specced and well built they're just a bit bland. I'd take one over a 320d though.

So may turds and so little time !

Have kind of decided that whatever I have next needs to be able to do a minimum of 30+mpg URBAN which immediately excludes pretty much anything over a 1.6 petrol.

I loved the grunt of my 330i but 19mpg took this p1$$

No mate just want a fully loaded turd that costs buttons to run so I can divert any remaining car cash into the e30 and hopefully 1 other fair weather turd.

The 320d and a4 are the predictably dull choices for derv daily turds. There's plenty of other stuff out there - I had fun with an Alfa 156 for 9 months and had no real dramas just standard servicing and old car stuff and it was a lot more entertaining than an e46. Just got to try a few :D

Rob take a look at 9-5 estates. Most are well spec'd and they are stupidly cheap. We've covered 18K in ours in a year, fully loaded with electric everything, leather and a very nice HK audio system from new. We paid 1150 for ours on a 02 plate and 99K on the clock.

Maintenance has been 1 service at £200, 4 new tyres at £260, wheel refurb at £150, replacement water pump £120 and that's it. I don't even get my hands dirty on it, all prices include labour by my local Indy.

Our stage 1 aero gets 18MPG in town and 30 on a run, but the 2.2 diesel gets much better and with a remap will be quicker than a 320d.

Yep,it's all good malc. One known problem has been dealt with by the dealer some sort of pulley damper that fails and needs upgrading with a better part. It has full history but doesn't appear to have had a DMF in the past so I will put some cash away for if and when it needs doing, but as of now it needs nothing. I'm going to change all the fluids and filters as a matter of course but that's it

If you're changing the filters yourself, make sure you don't put a cheap fuel filter in - it can cause you big problems, use the proper Delphi one. It's a 2 minute job.

Also, most of the guys on the Jag forum seemed to get their oil and filter changed by National Tyres as they only charge £50 and use the correct grade. I took mine down there and they did it while I waited - didn't have any issues (well, the car had loads of issues but not related to the oil change!)

EGR valve clean is another easy DIY job that can make the car run a bit better - there's a good photo guide on the Jag forum.

Nice looking Jaaaag by the way

Thanks Tom.

I had a mondeo with the same engine a few years ago and serviced it myself without any real dramas. A genuine service kit of all the filters is only about £50 so quite happy to have a crack myself

Did the egr blank on the mondeo too but I think this one is the slightly later engine with the electronic sensor on it so getting mixed reports of whether it can be fully blanked or not I will take it off and clean it anyway.

I didn't know you were so old Rob. A 406 Rapier Estate would have been cheaper and less rust prone - has wood and leather, and it was built in Coventry. :D

Sorry, but every time I see an X Type I think of 'Keeping up appearances'. I hope the diesel pump's good on that one.

First wash today - whatever the dealer or previous owner polished it with works very well :D

Only things on my to do list are the crankshaft damper pulley ( which has been done but with a cheap part rather than the upgraded Jag one ) and new belts and tensioner, and a fluids and filters service. 500 miles on one tank so far and it's still well out of the red and showing over 100 miles range left on the computer.

Think the previous owner has also had the sill covers off in the past too as there is zero rust and they are very clean under there I am in two minds whether to smooth rite them and then waxoyl on top or just to waxoyl them.
I think I will be investing in a set of front mudflaps too as forums seem to indicate this helps keep the buildup of crap at bay.

Like this one a lot 8)

My Mondeo has the 'death' rattle at idle. It has been like it for about 8 years, so I think I will leave it another 8 years.

How much was the jaguar bag? 20%? :)
