hi i have a 1989 320i and i have a 325i engine.
the engine needs a rebuild as last cam belt was 2002 8O
was just wondering if there is any parts worth using from the 320 engine. i am already planning on using the 1.3 motronic from the 320. i don't have a ecu with the 325 can i use the 320 with 325 chip or do i need 325 ecu?
what should i b looking to do in rebuild not looking 4 huge power just a few extra ponies would b nice.
any help is well appreciated cheers

Yes, you can use the 320i ECU, assuming it's a later Motronic 1.3 172 or 381 version; just install a 325i chip. On of my Mild or Wild chips will give you typical gains of 8-12bhp and better driveability (removal of flat spots inherent in the standard program).

No other parts from the 320i engine will be of any benefit on a 325i engine.

Why do you think you will need to rebuild the 325i engine just because the cambelt was last changed in 2002? :?

Normally, these engines, if properly serviced, are good for at least 150,000 miles or so before needing any work.

OK brilliant well that's easier anyway just a chip and not a whole ecu.
but the engine has done 157,000miles so was thinking hone bores check rings and clearances
head gasket cam belt and water pump and all associated gaskets and seals. anything i should b aware of?
is it worth lightening the flywheel?
many thanks cheers

You may well find that the engine is still perfectly serviceable as it is - some go to 250,000 miles or more if regularly serviced.

However, a new cambelt (and tensioner) and water pump are a good idea.

See the Zone Wiki and M20 section of the forum for further low-down:
