I've found that when I'm driving in slow moving stop/start traffic, at low speed, 1st or second gear, car starts chugging / jolting ! (318is) do I have a clutch problem ? or is there something else ?
I have not experienced this in any other cars, I also have an E46 318i SE, and that doesnt do it !

How many miles have the injectors on the E46 done? How many miles have the ones on the E30 covered?
Rebuilt injectors and an assault on inlet side air leaks and all will be well.

Thanks Brian, both cars have done just over 88,000 miles, but, the E46 is 11 years old and the E30 is 23 years old !!
Could it be anything to do with the fuel filter ?

At 88,000 miles, both cars could benefit from an injector rebuild, but the E46 does have the advantage of a feedback loop, monitoring and correcting the mixture strength to some degree, and has a more detailed engine map.
The E30 engine management just assumes the injectors are working properly, so if the amount of fuel injected is less than it should be for a given drive pulse, then the engine just runs weak.
Just £46 will get your injectors rebuilt for you (see traders' forum), including return carriage and the consumables that you need to refit them.
Any problem with the fuel filter would manifest itself more when the engine is under high load.
