Plugs out makes it easier!
You adjust the valve clearance when the cam lobe is 180 degrees away from the rocker arm.
A touch of tippex or similar on the one's that you have done may help you to remember where you are.

also a lot of people seem to struggle on how to turn the engine over. If manual just put it in gear and push car forward is the method I use. Don't be tempted to go backwards though, forwards direction only.Obviously need a bit of space in front of the car, if you run out of space knock it out of gear push backwards then start again. Don't think there is any negatives doing it this way.

yeah remove the fan clutch, plugs out and you can easily spin it in neutral with 22mm socket on a ratchet from the top

I tried a 27mm and it was dwarfed, so I`ll get the lad to find my long lost "big socket tool box" (up to 52mm) in the morning

The fine example of a M10B18 tucked away in a corner of my workshop has a 30mm crankshaft nut.

Indeed. No need to take the fan off, remove spark plugs or remove anything either. Just use a deep socket or a small extenstion and ram your hand down there. It's not like these have high compression.
I judge when the rockers are free by looking at the opposing cylinder. For instance, if I wanted to adjust number one cylinder, I'd look at the cam lobes and rocker arms for number 4. When the exhaust is just closed and the inlet is about to open (the scavenging stage) on number 4, that is the optimal place to adjust them. Look at 4 for 1, 3 for 2, 2 for 3, and 1 for 4.
