As above, where do i even begin!

Managed to get to the pulley first, had to order that "special tool" a bit of metal with 2 holes in it =l to get the fan bolt off. What a pain!!

so with that done and the pulley off, i then unbolted the 4 bolts holding the water pump. it doest want to budge...... like seriously does not want to budge!

I also read that i needed to insert 2 of the bolts at 12 and 6 o'clock to push the water pump out so....... bolts in and tighten them up evenly, heres the result
Image

yes it has snapped both sides of the water pump off, I dont know if its because the water pump failed ( and heated up more than usual )? or because its made of cheese <- i think this being the more likely

Anyway I'm not exactly sure what the next step would be, ive tried the screwdriver to pry it off ( didn't go wild ) dont fancy the idea of prying with a screwdriver against the block. tried bashing with a hammer to get it to budge and nothing, im running out of knuckle skin

Im sure that some of you have also experienced these issues, any help would be muchly appreciated.

if you dont have the "special tool" id recommend it. i spent a good few hours the day before trying the screwdriver between the pulley bolts method. Im sure other people have made it work, but got that tool delivered this morning went out, first attempt and it was off!

Yours is a M20 engine, IIRC, which has a completely different way of attaching the water pump to this engine, which I presume is a M40 or 42.
There is nothing (other than corrosion) to stop the pump on these from turning in its housing, once the bolts are removed, and this is the key to removing them.
Get some big grips on it and rotate it first, get some WD40 in beside it, loosen it up, and then, only then, use the bolts in the wings to help prise it out. To late for you for the last bit, so you'll have to pull outwards with the grips while turning.
If the pump resists all attempts, then it has to be broken up in situ, until it capitulates.
Bolts holding the pulley to the pump (and the viscous coupling) should be removed before removing the fan belt, tightening the belt first if it's too slack.

Thanks for reassurance Brian. Yes it's M20. Sorry mate, just nervous bout doing the timing belt and can't have the car off the road come Monday!

Should be ok though, getting worked up over nothing most likely.

ill need to go and get myself one of those wrenches, ive been using an adjustable at the moment ( not advised ) so ive lost afew of the fins on the housing. Now i know for next time

It did start moving back and forward, although its still being stubborn, i just dont think i have enough leverage with the adjustable, so bigger tools for me

And yes brian its a m40 1.6i

Vice grips and a clonk with a hammer has worked for me before to get the fan off, followed by a pull on the fan belt to loosen the fan belt pulley bolts then slacken and remove fan belt. Unscrew bolts and pulley is off.
