that's one of the nicest IS's I've seen in a while, you could probably sell that for at least £1000 profit without doing anything to it

1991 BMW E30 318i Neon Design Convertible (Sold)
1990 BMW E30 325i Touring (Sold)
1990 BMW E30 318IS (Sold)
1990 BMW E30 316i (RIP)
Thanks matepac1982 wrote:that's one of the nicest IS's I've seen in a while, you could probably sell that for at least £1000 profit without doing anything to it
It has a few small problems but nothing major, slowly getting through the list. I'm a bit anal about it atm as I don't want to bastardise it
Thank you
So...... I got sick of the engine rattling my ears to pieces and the coolant side of the disasters now mean it's pressuring big time! After some thinking..
I decided I'd use the money from selling my old seats and buy another engine instead of opening a tin of worms repairing my original one as I don't know what the rattle is wether it's chain or worse and the pressurising could be the head gasket or even worse something cracked.
After a small search I found a low mileage m42 from an e36 not too far from me.
Here it is

Thought I was onto a winner with this one with just an oil leak from the timing case until I started stripping parts off the engine to find this

As you can imagine I hit the roof and wasn't happy at all
I was certain I wasn't taking the head off this engine as it kind if defeats the object of just replacing the engine when I could of maybe repaired the original
After a few beers and some thinking I managed to fix the problem

And it's now all pretty, painted and leak free. And it's ready to go in!

Just need a spare day to get it in now!

Finally got time this weekend gone to change the very tired 212k engine, such a nicer car to drive now with no rattles and it not cooking up every 5 mins, doesn't feel quite as fast but the new engines only on 82k from an e36

And all back in

Luckily a friend let me use his garage to swap the engine and saved me doing it on the floor

More progress to come

I paid nearly the same for a tatty 325i Touring and the receipts folder is probably around the £2K mark after 2 years and there still loads to do on it.MrHines wrote:Thanks, it was cheap I think but the bills are slowly creating up and the receipt folder is growing fastG-Bear wrote:Good work. And an excellent find, bargain at the price you paid too..

I used a bit of (I think) 17.5 mm steel pipe (extension lead handle as it's the only thing I could get that was a very tight fit) as an insert that was about 2 inches long and then built the original pipe shape out of chemical metal and filed it back to original shape. Seems to have done the trick, cooling system works as it should and doesn't leak.Speedtouch wrote:How did you go about doing this repair? I seem to have become attached to this car so I can see the expense growing and growing, but then if I'm sensible e30's are only going up in valueG-Bear wrote:I paid nearly the same for a tatty 325i Touring and the receipts folder is probably around the £2K mark after 2 years and there still loads to do on it.MrHines wrote:Thanks, it was cheap I think but the bills are slowly creating up and the receipt folder is growing fastG-Bear wrote:Good work. So, I bought myself some alpina reps Friday and they were pretty shafted with corrosion and curbing so refurbed them on sat. Then discover this morning that they don't actually bolt straight on, spigot rings, spacers and longer bolts were needed. Well they're on safe and sound, made the colour up myself. Personally I didn't like them this morning but they've grown on me a lot over the day
Here's some snaps of them fitted. Should have got pics of how fluffed they were before hand, 20 spokes, wet and dry and sun results in blisters and sun burn!

Thanks mate, I don't have the budget for bbs' and wanted a bigger wheel. Picked these up cheap and gave them a repaint, they look ok for nowGreeny wrote:People say Alpina rep's are to common and have been done to death but there is a reason for that. They look great on an E30.
Well after trying to sell it and getting nothing but hassle I've decided to keep it and spend a bit of cash on it. I changed the wheels to smaller wheels as I'm going low with it when I get some coilovers, fixed alsorts sinse last time I was here and also done the all red rear lights. Here's some current photos.

Looks smart - just needs some decent centre caps.
