Does anyone know if you can insure a car on a classic policy for road use for 3-6 months and then for fire and theft only for the rest of the year ?

I want to get my touring mot'd next week but with the best will in the world by the end of October it will be back in the garage under wraps until summer 2015

Classic insurance is fairly cheap anyway but even at £150 or so it sounds a bit daft paying that for 12 months of cover when it will only see the road for 3-4 months of that at most

Any suggestions ?

Also road tax - with the new no disk system coming in later this year where you can pay by monthy direct debit will this's mean that you can just pay for the months you use the car rather than the joke of a system which is in place now where you pay 6 months up front and then have to get a refund - I'm still waiting for the 2 months they owe me from when I sold the Alfa - I sent the form off the day I sold it in May :x

I think (but not certain) - you tax "6 or 12" months still, pay by direct debit and once you sell the car/cancel they "refund" what's left still , pretty much same as now

Also no tax carries over once a car is sold, when anyone buys any car private or dealer from October they have to get their own tax, and seller then applies for a refund, this making the dvla/governent millions extra a year in all the 3/4 of a month left , that sellers loose when applying for a refund and only getting full months back, its a scam- a car deal mid month..seller looses that months tax refund and buyer re taxes and looses 1st half of month

There really needs to be some sort of clssssic car tax introduced , maybe attached to limited milage classic insurance policies

As its all computerised now - you should just be able to specify and pay for how many months you want to tax for

There's already an 'administration charge' when you buy 6 months rent,I always tax the cabbie for a full year and claim the balance back when the frost arrives.

Regarding the OP's question on insurance,my premium for the cabbie is about £150pa,I see little point in changing the cover for the period it is not in use.

Same here, a year insurance and after the deposit which isn't much , the remaining 9 instalments are penuts anyway ,the roads nearest to me are never gritted in winter and although once gritting starts the car won't be out, but all winter on dry bright days it will have a little run round the block and better its always insured than not

All goes towards increasing credit score, and when you have to pay out for an engine re build and parts, putting it in, all fluids and service bits etc, battery, exhaust system, tax, plus insurance and tax mot (plus £450 for work) on the daily at same time, made it a very expensive month

Went with Lancaster, 1500 miles a year, garaged, agreed value, includes to and from work, £25 deposit and 10 x £11 a month happy days. Just got to book in for mot on Saturday and then I can buy a sodding tax disk

I'd like to know this too.

I checked Lancaster and yikes: they just quoted me £1900 on my sport! All these classic insurance places seem massively expensive for me (dunno if being 23 is the issue, but it's a 2nd car kept in a locked up compound in the middle of no-where so not like it's high mileage and in a crime hotspot).

Admiral were £500, which is the best so far, but I'd have to pay to tax it over the winter too, as they won't insure an untaxed car, which is a waste of ~£150 a year. :(

You'll find the vast majority of classic insurance companies won't want to touch you until you're 25, so that may explain it.

Yeah, I've noticed Sky won't even quote for an under 25 on a classic. That would explain it though. Looks like it's likely to be Admiral + unneeded tax in the end(maybe they'll use it to fix some potholes?!)

Seems an odd rule IMO - but at least there's no discrimination in the insurance industry!

Adrian Flux have always been best for me for a classic policy. I'm 22, for my 325, 6000miles, fully comp, agreed valuation of £5k, slight mods covered - £700.

For my age I thought that was cheap on a 2.5, to say I was paying £600 for a 1.2 clio
Admiral quoted me the same price for a standard policy.
