I was quoted £200+ to have the sump gaskets replaced as there is a small oil leak from the sump. I have not banged it and it and all new gaskets were installed before putting the m50 in last year... Seems odd the focker is leaking. Is it a reasonable price and could it not just be that the bolts have loosened? I feel like the garage is lusting on my back passage 8O

Thanks,

JF

£200 all in is about right, its not a nice job at all, the engine needs supporting and the subframe/steering rack/some suspension needs to be removed. Easily a full days work

Thanks Danthe, I did not realize it was such a mission ! Is it common to see leaks on those sumps after only a year old gasket?

Its common that they leak after a while, especially if they have been replaced

£200! DIY for a tenner!

Although you will need an engine hoist to lift the engine... easily hire one for the day will still be cheaper than £200

I'm about to try and do the same thing.. Isn't it one gasket? I notice you're using plural..

It's the one in the following pic right?

That's the one for your car, but this thread is about an M50 one, which is a much more 'sophisticated' gasket.

Changing an M20 sump gasket IS an all day job, unless you can manage to scrape out all of the old gasket with the sump just dropped an inch or so. The oil pump sits low in the sump, so the sump can't be removed without raising the engine or dropping the subframe.

I raise the engine enough to remove the mounts, substitute them with some old metal oil filters (M10 /M3 ) do nicely , then lower the engine so that the mount arms rest on the oil filters.

There is then enough room to access all the bolts including the three 13mm bolts that secure the oil pump. The oil pump is then removed with the sump. Slightly gynaecological but far preferable to having to support the engine and lower the cross member.
I have never had a cross member 17mm snap flush with the chassis rails, but I know plenty who have :(
