i was told to do the red/black wire mod due to my issues with central lock.
looking at the pic below, which wires should get joined?

No need to go anywhere near the locking 'relay', or remove the cover above it. The wires are all accessible just by removing the speaker, which allows you to see (easiest with a mirror) the rear of the A pillar socket.
