Very simple; a moving coil loudspeaker has an impedance (similar to resistance) of the coil - in your case, it appears to be an 8 ohm speaker. If you were to use a multimeter to measure its resistance, it should read approx. 8 ohms.

I suggest you do this, or use a 1.5V battery connected across it to test it makes a clicking sound. If not, then the speaker is dead and needs to be replaced.

Connecting a '12V siren' from E-bay in place of it is unlikely to work at all!

The speaker still works .
We tested using a 12V battery charger .
So the alarm seems to be no good no more , or the siren bit anyway

I hope you didn't connect the battery charger direct across the speaker?!

Yes did it twice with no faults?
Did it twice just to make sure I weren't hearing things.

I'm amazed it didn't blow the speaker coil the first time round! 12V into 8 ohms = 1.5 Amps of current, or 18 watts of power.

Typically, these small speakers are only rated at 0.25-0.5 Watts.

We are on about the alarm speaker right?
If so is there anyway we can use another alarm?
Can you nominate one.

Yes, I'm on about the 8 ohm loudspeaker in your alarm.

You could fit any other alarm that you want.

But couldn't I just fit a alarm speaker with the wires that are there.?

The problem there is that the circuit contains the oscillator for the alarm, that drives through the loudspeaker.

The 12V siren you mentioned earlier has the oscillator circuit built in, and the existing oscillator circuit probably wouldn't be capable of driving the 12V siren.

I suggest you test the loudspeaker again with a 1.5V battery this time, and if (by some miracle!) it's still working, try to get the circuit board operational again.

Is there a wire missing from the top right of the board?

Would this happen to be the one you use on your private parts, by any chance?

That's the one. I bought it at a boot sale in Cantebury. It took ages to wash off the smell of 'trunnion ' oil :)

Hehe, as a previous Minor owner, you should surely know that the trunnions should be regularly lubed with a suitable grease, such as Castrol LM; oil is reserved for the lever arm dampers, carburettor dashpot and steering rack.

BROOMY is definitely a spesh with sadomasochistic leanings . I reckon he's up for it, especially if I serve it with an old Clifford that I have 'fixed' with a club hammer :D

I need a picture or a diagram of the alarm wiring.
Could it be possible that it actually need the battery to actually work and someone's lied to me?

It's possible that it may need the back-up battery to work, but I would expect it to do somehting if powered up by the car battery.

Did you test the speaker again with a 1.5V battery like I suggested?

No .
Will a regular AA do?
Would a wire across the terminals do?
Just till I know it works.

Yes, either an AA/AAA, or even a watch battery will suffice. Use a length of wire to connect to one terminal of the speaker, and touch the other battery terminal on the other speaker terminal - it should make a click sound.

Well, congratulations - at least the speaker is working. :P If you have a soldering iron, I would go over the corroded solder joints, and re-do them.

Sure. Why not get a battery then, and try it...

I would imagine you could re-use your existing circlip, if it's in reasonable condition.

Does your central locking on your boot lock at all times?
Mine seems to never work.
Just locks the rest up.
