Just wondering if anyone has had their windscreen replaced through their insurance???

I'm assuming they will just replace the glass, for the cost of your excess and not the seal as well???

I do have a heated screen I was going to put in and have all new seal and trim to hand - but I'm thinking of saving the heated screen for my next possible project!!!

So basically wondering if it's worth getting a new screen through the insurance or a second hand one with the new seal & trim???

Anyone got any opinions/experience in this???

I've always been wary of having the windscreen replaced under insurance. When I rang the company that my insurance uses I asked them whether it would be an OEM supplied screen and they said it wouldn't be.

I have not actually changed my windscreen yet, but have removed it in the past for another reason. Its simple enough, although a little tricky getting the seal back on around the dash if removed.

My opinion would be to get second hand with new seal etc. Even new from BMW I don't think the price was outrageous when I looked into it.

i recently got a replacement galss for my cabby - came with the mirror mount as well which i was pleased with as mine had fallen off.

Its nice to see out of a screen with no scratches / chips etc. Told the insurance that mine had a top tint - when the guy came, he said that he had the wrong screen but i said just fit it anyway :)

as clean as a second hand screen will be, you will always get the little little chips that are hard to see as it will be x years old. On the plus side, you can be having a cuppa tea whilst the guy is putting in the sealing strip :D

I had a bird strike on my cabbie one morning, bloody winged thing very nearly joined me in the driver's seat!

The insurance co sent a 'fitter' out with a replacement 'screen, upon arrival I pointed out to this guy that he had brought a saloon/touring 'screen.
'The're all the same, mate',he told me.
'No,cabbie's have the mirror mounted on a spigot on the 'screen,saloon's/tourings have the mirror on an arm bolted to the upper rail',I replied,'Check out my touring'

So he super-glued the mirror to my new 'screen...it fell off within two days, without even moving the car.

I moaned, and after almost two weeks he turned up again with the correct BMW supplied 'screen with a mirror spigot...

Mmmmm, I did wonderabout the quality of the screen they might fit - but I do like the idea of a nice new screen, as Quaser says!!!

Might check the price of a new screen myself and then see what my insurance company are saying about OEM, etc.
Really don't want to fit this myself - I'm ok with nuts and bolts, but I don't wanna f this up!!!

Windscreen is easy to fit,the locking strip is just fiddly to get in.Guy who did the cabbie 'screen had a clever little plastic thing to poke it home that did not damage the paint.I've used a small screwdriver when I have fitted them myself.

You must get the glass central in the seal,or the locking strip will not go round the corners.

I had one in my cab last week fitted by auto glass, I opted to go to them. On the first visit I thought I would hang around while he got my screen out of the rack only to find it was an untinted clear one with out the blue sun strip either. Fair play to them they got the correct one in by the next morning an only cost £45 excess. Not Oem but dam near

i personally dont see the point in paying the extra for an OEM screen unless everything is OEM and the car is in concours condition.

The only other car i had to get an oem screen for (supplied by the insurance company) as an audi a2, where the screen curved both ways. The replica screens would distort the vision near the dashboard - but ive not had any issues with with any other insurance screens that ive had replaced.

Also, for the sake of £60 -£100 which is what people are charging for second hand screens - you might as well just get a new one (thats the same the excess)
