Just got this Golf 1.3 for my brother who just passed. I had one as my first car and it was ultra reliable ive got my own e30 325i but I cant wait to get this going and body work done.( which is only a few dinks and two tiny rust patches.) 69k on the clock with all paper work. nice little fun car i thinks.

Lovely - nice to see one that hasn't been lowered or enhanced / ruined by Dubtwatz.

Looks very clean and tidy.

Love our mk2, 1987, done 140k now and used every day up until last winter. Very solid and reliable, now needs a new boot and a small piece welding on one sill and going through a mini restoration. New arms / bushes joints and calipers all round.

Easy to work on and parts are cheap as chips. Good fun for fwd scribblers too.
cheers,

harry

Great little cars, my brother and I's GTI restoration is almost done, he's currently rebuilding the engine which is looking rather tasty and I finished the suspension rebuild last night. It reminds me I really need to update my thread on it we have pretty much replaced every nut and bolt on the car.

OK Golf fiends, how do you see a 120,000 mile '90 big bumper oak green 16 valve ? It has PAS, electric windows and sunroof and tidy cloth. Alas it also has some 16" Borbet X spoke things and a nasty 60mm ,or so, drop Weitec (?) suspension kit . It had the head done last year, is not rusty and is pretty tidy but ain't going to win any shows any time soon
.
Somebody owes me money, the Golf was a job to get it up to scratch ready to serve . He has no money for the repairs (Ca£500) and I am not spending my money to fix his car , not while he owes me. I reckon its worth £2500 ish as a together car, he reckons £3500. I reckon the mileage, modz and the dearth of paper work / bills will not do it any favours. He now wants me to bid him as it stands. I see it as a bag, he does not agree. I do not want it unless there is a good drink in it as I am already having nightmares about the undesirables that it will attract when advertised :(

PS Why anybody would want one of these nasty things over a similar priced 318is, God knows ? :? The E30 is in a different league in every way except possibly rust protection.

I'd say even 2.5 was pretty strong, at 3.5 I'd want something immaculate, but not necessarily low miles.

Some of the really low miles, low owner time warp cars are making pretty strong money, but it doesn't mean every mk2 is worth a fortune.

Maybe if it was really clean with standard wheels and suspension it could be worth in the threes.
cheers,

Looks like a honest little car!

A Mk2 golf 1.6 diesel is a thing of absolute comedy.

On a cold morning they would rattle the fillings out of your teeth. :) (Ask Fatman Golf)

My first car was a mk2 1.3 :) great little car and so easy to fix

Pity about the 4 speed gearbox though.made trips to Preston deafening when the engine was screaming when I was only doing 65-70

^^^^ When I first got married all the good cars had to go to finance house and wedding etc. I put the missus in an '84 Golf C 1.3 with said 4 speeder. Was a tiresome chariot on a run but what a little trooper it was.

I had a 5dr 1.6cl in doom blue as a first car. It had 4+E on the floor! The poor turd didn't stand a chance with a 16/17 year old lad molesting it. At least it only started out as a £175 westbury auction car!

Some great memories in that, I suspect it is dead now. Sold for 650 quid around 9-10 years ago.

'Aye she's a minter lad' Any problems the mk2 has 'sure, all mk2's like that' with a radio that only receives the shipping forecasts from 1982. :)

Was going to post about these myself and just seen this

Been looking at mk2s latley and pondering getting a gti for a nip about daily

Anyone got any advice on 8/16v differences ? 2/4 door ?

Really can't decide on what to go for, or weather to get an e30 instead, a nice e30 daily (318 or is) isn't easy to find that days that isn't auto or hanging out its arse, and nice mk2 gti are getting thin on the ground these days but not bad prices and Surely going to rise in values over comming years so now isn't a bad time to get one ?

An E30 is a FAR superior car in EVERY way apart from rust resistance . After an E30, Golfs definitely feel like the 'cheap seats' .

If you must have one , for obvious reasons, avoid the five doors . They are similarly unloved and as difficult to sell as E30 quattroportes :)

Pete, mk2s rot worse than an E30.

If it was me I would be looking for a 8v GTi. But I'd chose an E30 over one all day long.

My ideal would be an e30 318is in red or white only , but they are not popping up often or close thesee days , and any seller wants "offerzzz" and thinks its worth 3-3.5k or has roof blisters or arch rust etc

May not like the golfs to drive wel see, its just a case if learning a bit about them really, I like the oak green 16v look, price wise looking around there's not much in it between 2/4 door models, in fact they don't look bad in 4door unlike some cars

Be nice to drive 8/16 models and see what the difference feels like

But also like e30s its finding one that's not been molested and dropped on its arse with rimzzzz and the iffy looking single headlight conversion and all the rest of it

My mate bought a mk2 golf of eBay one night after a few beers, bargain he said.

Both rear arches full of filler, fuel cap held in with filler, scuttle full of filler, floor pans had more Shultz than I've ever seen, the roof was also rotten. I do believe I have some pictures of it on the back of my trailer going to the scrapyard. That was worse than any E30 I've encountered.

He now breaks old VWs and from what I've seen they're worse than E30s

Well show me some pics then because as I've said, I've never seen or heard a badly rotten mk2 golf, certainly not worse than an E30 (and we all know how F UCKED an E30 can be!) and I've got several mates that are into/work with dub scrap.

Ask Fatman Golf about rot.

He's send more Mk2/Mk3 golfs to Mr Wong (car to toaster extraordinaire) than the scrappage scheme winkeye

Mk3 Golfs and Polo 6n2s rot like a motherf**ker.

Yes mk3's rot badly but we're not taking about mk3's!

mk2's are not bad for rot, certainly not worse than an E30!
