Hey all, been steadily planning a nice restoration/upgrade and mod package for my car (320i SE) , M20X swap, brakes, shocks, possible turbo in a few years, but I obviously want to start with the body first, a few problem areas and a respray.

Couple of questions, looking for opinions if possible :)

I've picked a colour which I think will work nicely, taken from a colour I've seen at a Mopar meeting at Santa Pod on a classic american car.

It's Pantone 5763c but it'll obviously be metallic. Do you think it will look quite nice?

http://www.myperfectcolor.com/PMS-Color ... htm/page/8

(Half way down the page)

It's that or a really dark purple, which I think would also look mint!

Also, I know IS models were galvanised, does anyone have any experience with getting their non-IS galvanised?

I'm expecting the cost may be pretty high, but if it helps keep her rust free for years, cost won't be a problem.

Cheers for any advice.

This colour?

I like it, would look shit metallic though, it needs to stay a block colour to work.

I've been reading too much banter about this galvanising :)

Maybe not metallic then, but a nice finish, I dont think Matt would work.

You would clear coat it and that would give it the nice shiny/smooth as glass effect.

I would also say this before you start, go look at other peoples paint jobs and familiarise yourself with whats involved, figure out what kind of finish your happy with (do you want it smooth as glass or would you not mind some orange peel etc) as a paint job can be real expensive! Talk to loads of people and go see painters previous jobs and talk with the owner of the car. My paint job is good but it would have to be at 3k euro but he could have gone even better with a show car finish where he piles on more lacquer and does more flatting and polishing.

Also bear in mind if your going for a full color change and speaking of galvanising, does this mean your totaly stripping the car to a 100% bare shell and doing a proper and very expensive restoration and color change the shell properly and a total re build

Or a just a bodge color change leaving inside and bulkhead as engine bay etc original color

Cheers Jozi, there's a few shops round here so i'll take a little journey and see what people have to say.

I'll also see the car I took the colour inspiration from at the Mopar show @ Santa pod in a few months, so I'm planning on having a chat with the owner to see what finish they had it sprayed with.

Polsta - I was actually going to go full colour. I know It'll be a serious project that takes me a long time, but I know it'll be worth it in the long run.

Regarding the restoration, I'll do as much as it needs, time will tell to what extent I need to do, but she's a pretty solid base at present though, some things will totally rebuilt and It'll be a mix of OE/OEM parts throughout, with the obvious bigger engine drop, suspension and brake upgrades.

That color reminds me of this smiley: :puke:

Each to their own, but on the big flat surface areas of an E30 it'll just look horrible, like some discarded cobbled-together Soviet junk a la Moskvitch/Izh.

A dark metallic purple, such as Daytona Violet, looks very smart on an E30:

I was worried about that. It's really hard to tell as the sample colour online looks different in sunlight and would be different still with a clear coat.

Daytonaviolett Metallic is the purple i'd go with if i went down that route. How popular does that seem for resprays?

Seeing as it's a factory colour, (albeit rare, surely?) it may be better to go Daytona, if it's good enough for stock BM...

Go with what ever colour you like ;) I went with a non-bmw colour change on mine, the shell was red now its blue inside and out. It took me ages to find a colour I liked, I got some sample area's painted on a panel, someone suggested getting some coke cans painted in different colours, I also photoshoped the colour onto the car as best as I could to give me an idea what it will be like. I'm very picky though and I did test the painters patience with it.

I'd look for pictures of cars in that colour as well but keep in mind, they are probably photoshoped, your pc monitor isnt callibrate or it's in light conditions that make it look better

I don't know if you could get the code and also get a painter and pay for the way they paint to get the finish (its baked and cooled polished flattened quite a few times) but they have been putting this deep dark metallic purple color on the new wraith models, and it looks incredible up close and in different shades of light and changes color , an e30 in that would just be sublime, although that sort if finish can not be achieved by the average sprayer , but if your a serious player with the big kaboodles it would be worth investigating

They also do a royal blue which is beautiful

I am drawn to the green colour, I have just checked pics of a Moskvitch (I had no idea what they were) and It wouldn't be much like that green, the Moskvitch is much more a "snotty" colour?

Mine would be more greyish/a slight bit browny if I can find the right paint.

Literally torn between the purple and green. I'll see if any shops could show me a potential sample, or I can see if I can get a friend who used to work for Brown Brothers/PPG if he could get a mock up sample tin done.

That wraith purple is absolutely stunning. I'd be inclined to change opinion toward that, the Daytona is lovely but looks a little maroon at times from what I've seen.

I wish I was a serious player with the kaboodles. I could probably get 4k toward the paint job... maybe more if some investments come through in the future.. 4k should get a decent job done?

EDIT , I believe it's "twilight purple" http://www.carsdirect.com/2013/rolls-ro ... tom/colors

The rolls colors are incredible but its a lot down to the process to apply and finish it and its not quick, this blue/purple 2 tone is immense ,its a bit like pearlescent in it changes color, a tech 2 in that exact finish would look incredible, but wouldn't suit some e30 styles, thing with e30 standard colors is they really suit the style and trim contrast where as some of the more jazzy paint finishes would look better with color coded trim
