I went about adjusting the valve clearances yesterday and everything was pretty straight forward but I had trouble finding Top Dead Centre when doing so.

I know that for adjusting the valve, the camshaft lobe must be pointing directly downwards for that valve you are adjusting. But I'm finding it pretty hard to tell if the lobe is fully down or not, or to an angle.

How do I go about making sure I have the camshaft in the correct position when adjusting each valve?

The engine is now even more noisier than before!

as long as you are on the back edge of the cam you should be fine eg the round side not the pointy side

Same, +1.

I spent ages messing with TDC and "rule of 9".

Just find the back of the lobe, not critical where as its wide, and adjust that valve. Rotate to the next one. Make a list and check them off.

I left my car overnight, so it was a cold as possible... :)
