To my touring which was stolen last week. That'll teach me to live in London...

Here's hoping all the work I did on it was sub-standard and the car suffers a massive, preferably wheel related, failure at high speed with thief in tow -- meanwhile, I have to move on.

So, buying another one on Saturday and as security is now on my list of priorities had a question: anyone fitted a removable steering wheel? Hate the idea of people thinking I'm thinking of myself as some sort of racer but seems like an effective theft deterrent.

Any thoughts or ideas of where such a thing can be bought much appreciated.

P.S Tourer was royal blue, reg: G468 BDG. Auto with sport box, covered in mud with unusually fat tyres on generic five point alloys. Can't say there's a reward but as my cousin is a policeman can make sure the thief gets treated 'properly'.

A snap-off (brand name) steering wheel boss is a great idea.

They can't drive the car away then.

Plus a decent Cat 1 alarm with dual zone proximity sensors, movement sensors (incase it's lifted onto a truck or similar) and a loud siren, and preferably interior scalding if the car is broken into.

Hope you find a decent replacement.

another tip i've heard is don't park with your front wheels straight, so it's a trifle difficult to get on the tow truck

I have never had my car stolen but have almost been hijacked and having lived in South Africa which is the hijack crime capital of the world, I invested in one of these babies and actually used it once to great effect, so much so, the f***ker died of a heart attack.

I've been told car won't get through an MOT with a removable steering wheel (don't know if this is true), still would like to get a quick release boss that didn't need to be welded to the shaft - don't know if they exist, let alone something suitable for an e30.

I like the tip about turning the wheels - never thought of that and doesn't cost anything!

As for burning people alive - not quite there yet.

I think that's rubbish about it not passing the MoT, although this could be wrong?

Even if it is correct, you could remove it easily come MoT time, then reattach it.

Very worthwhile though, if a potential thief sees NO steering wheel, they'll probably walk on....

I assume these can't be altered to fit an M-Tech II wheel, they are for MOMO wheels and the like?

If it could fit an M-Tech II Steering wheel, I'd have it.

The flame thrower thing wasn't as bad as what it looks. It didn't quite burn the would be thief to a cinder, but you could set the strength of flame to come out. There was a small peddle switch that was placed either next to or between the accelerator and brake pedal that you pressed if confronted. Anyway, it worked well and is a perfectly legal security system to install in the car.

I wouldn't want to attempt fitting one to my 325i here in the UK, especially if one can end up in the slammer just for punching a burglars lights out, let alone burn them alive. All I have security wise is a steering lock and I turn my front wheels and then lock it tight. Seems to work for me.

I live in Belfast and while I have never had a car nicked (although I wish they would steal my 206 so I can be rid of it ) my friends Mazda MX3 V6 was nicked last night.. it had 2! steering locks on it, a DiscLok that covers the entire steering wheel and a handbrake/gearstick lock.. didn't seem to stop them taking it for a scenic trip round North Belfast. I don't know how they did it, I suspect they had a another car full of powertools.

I had thought about the security issues too, the best thing I can think of is to take your ECU with you, little anti-static bag, pop it in it and off you go. I was going for a standalone ECU which is why I had thought of it, it's smaller than the Motronic one and not as sensitive. The only downside I could really think of with the Motronic, other than it dying on you is the loss of O2 maps everytime and the relearning it would have to do.

Park the car in gear, wheels turned on full lock.

The BEST devices are home made cut off switches HIDDEN out of site....
so event the best alarm by-passer will wonder why it's still not starting when he's bypassed the alarm. things like fuel cut off, coil cut off, possibly starter cut off but then they can jus bump start with no starter...

End of the day if they want your car they WILL get it, they will bide there time until its at its most vulnerable.

As also said above, a good cat 1 alarm i.e. Clifford/toad/avital with external prox sensor/tilt sensor etc is a good start. Also if you use a disklock, weld 2 bars round the back of it so it cant be prised off but still retains the "spin on attack" quality's ;) there are also other ways to strengthen a disklock but ive not been told

i used to have a fuel shutoff valve on my mk2 escort rs2000. cost about a tenner.

teh idea being, if someone's got past the immobiliser, gear lock, steering locks etc etc they'll start the car and it will run for about 100 yards on the fuel in the carbs before cutting out in the road without a hope of restarting. hopefully this would be enough to shit up the thieving shite so they leg it before thinking of setting light to it.

the only problem is i kept forgetting it! i've had to hop out and climb underneath to disable it in the right hand lane of a dual carriageway before now!


the best idea imo is to concentrate in visual deterrants. if they looks at your car and then move on to the next, at least you're in the clear! my 205 gti had a very neat setup... a led flasher circuit that flashed 2 leds on teh dash and one in each brake light and one in each front indicator (clear ones) all in time. cost Ԛ£10 all in and made people give it a wide berth. most of all, it did not look like the usual flashing led's you can buy (eg did not look fake as they were in time). also, a cat 1 alarm and immobiliser helps!

still won't help you now though... you can at leash hope the thieving shits are used to nicking saxos and won't last more than 30 mins with rear wheel drive, hopefully hitting a lampost at 100mph sideways

sorry about your car mate . the removeable steering wheel is a good idea mate and as an mot tester the removeable wheel is not reason for a fail, as long as it locks on to the colum shaft securley i.e no play
