I know a lot about cars. I can look at a car's headlights and tell you exactly which way it's coming

Great that the Touring is finally recognised, but that article was written by a retard. When could you last pick up a decent SD1, Saab 900, Mk II Golf GTI, Corrado, RX-7, Capri or Merc SL at a low enough price to call it an "investment"?
As to the other scrap - Morris Minors have been cheap shit since they were new. Nobody ever wanted to buy the Fuego, and even fewer will now, while the 200-series Volvo and Merc W123 are still around in such numbers that it'll be at least a decade before they become rare enough to appreciate in value.
I admit, I'd have an Avantime if it had a decent engine, but it didn't. Not that it matters, I've only ever seen one in my life anyway since they sold so badly from new. The missus is seriously pushing me towards an XJ Jag though.

They can't have been that bad if they last 40+ years and so many, including mine, are still in everyday use. Quality First, I think you'll find, old bean!Grrrmachine wrote:As to the other scrap - Morris Minors have been cheap shit since they were new.

+1 I find it astonishing there are unrestored, albeit shabby, Minors in everyday use still in London at 50 years old. Not my cup of tea but they must be tough as boots!Speedtouch wrote:They can't have been that bad if they last 40+ years and so many, including mine, are still in everyday use. Them everyday use Minors will be like triggers broom. The reason there are still a few around is that they made them for over twenty years, they are cheap to buy and very simple and cheap to fix.

This. By "cheap shit" I mean they were sold cheaply, driven cheaply and fixed cheaply - which means they'll always be cheap. I can't think of a single "classic" car that was sold as a bargain basement offering when new that now commands mega-money... other than the MkI/II Ford Escorts. And for every Escort that sells for 25k, there are a hundred Morris Marinas or Hillman Avengers rusting in a lockup because the owners couldn't even flog 'em for 500 quid.pacerpete wrote:Them everyday use Minors will be like triggers broom. I think you'll find that prices for the Convertible and Traveller versions have in recent years risen quite sharply - decent Travellers now command £7,000 or so at least; hardly cheap. Same applies to the classic Mini, and aren't you forgetting the bubble cars such as Heinkel Trojan, Messerschmitt, etc.? They now command silly money!

OK, you can still buy a £500 Minor, but it will be a shed in need of total restoration.
But yes, as Pete says, they were built in large numbers (first British car to sell a million units) and most parts are still available so they are relatively cheap to keep on the road - which is part of their appeal.
In fact, only yesterday, I was changing the nearside rear hub oil seals on mine, after the pesky MOT tester moaned about some leaking going on.
I was able to effect this repair using some lengths of scaffold / pipe offcuts from the back of the garage and a club hammer to drift the wheel bearing and seals into place.

DHFiS - that's staggering
Pony, a sport Evo was never considered a cheap car, and I doubt there was ever a time in the last two decades when they could be had "cheaply". Next you'll be telling us that we all missed our chances buying a 1M "when they could be had for pennies".

£5000 pony!
True. You can't pick up a new M3 for less than 56k and I see one every now and then. So people must have the money for them.pony wrote:I think Pacer had one for £10k.
Depends what u call cheap.
Expensive to you maybe cheap to someone else and vice versa.
