So basically i want to check that my engine is what I believe it to be. There's a few numbers on side of the engine but this doesn't definitively give me an answer. I know it's 84mm bore so we're down to 2.5 vs 2.8, and it's not the tu version as it's single vanos with a single hump in the rocker cover.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Oil filler neck is at the front of the engine on a 2.8 and rear of the engine on a 2.5

Cheers both, i was sold it from someone on here as a m52b28 :(.

Just wondering how you identified it from those numbers so i know for next time?

macas when you say oil filler neck is this just the position of the oil cap? Mines towards the front of the engine.

Ignore the filler cap location, all vanos engines have them at the front, non vanos engines can have them at the front or rear

The above is an iron block, no 2.8 came with an iron block in this part of the world, the size of the bore denotes it must be a 2.5

Unless of course the 2.8 engine has been rebuilt into the iron block? But im sure you would have been told about it if that was the case

Who did you buy it off?

Ok that makes sense, i don't know why the iron block didn't click sooner.

I doubt it has to be honest, the ad is here:

EDIT: I bought almost everything bar the shell, the m50 manifold came unattached to the engine, and the engine didn't have a manifold.....should i be reading into that? I paid extra for the manifold.

Can anyone else chime in on identifying this....i'm lost. The seller is adamant it's an m52, is it a case of taking the head off and measuring the stroke.

Iron block = 2.0 or 2.5
Only alloy block is 2.8

I have the sump off so i measured the centreline of the rod to the centreline of the crank, approximately 44.25mm, x2, /10 = 8.848cm.

Times this by pi x r^2 (r as 4.2cm) = 490

times 6 = 2900cc ish

Obviously trying to accurately get both centrelines isn't easy but my value is suggesting it's a 2.8.

I do however want a second opinion on this or take the head off and measure bdc to tdc to get a more accurate reading.

Confused?.... So am i.

You also said it came with a 413 ECU and an M50 loom, these are no good for an M52B28

America had iron block m52b28's so we know it's possible and with the nikasil issues it could be possible an iron block was swapped in. The seller is certain it's an m52 as it had pink injectors, stainless exhaust manifolds and the m52 inlet.

Calculations don't lie, when i get more accurate ones or a second opinion i will let you know.

This is my first engine conversion and the first time i've ever even taken an engine apart so please bare with me. I have you lot who are very knowledgeable telling me one thing, but the seller telling me another and i'm stuck in the middle trying todo my best lol.

The guy said he was going for an obd 1 conversion? maybe that makes sense? I'm not sure what the loom is to be honest.

He would be telling you the opposite though, especially as you paid well over the odds

If you want to measure the stroke simply remove a plug and use a piece of wire to measure between TDC and BDC

76mm give or take 0.5mm. Which = 2525cc.

So there we have it's a 2.5 litre engine, thanks for sticking with me, i'll be sorting this with the seller as soon as possible.

Not the best start to a build i must admit haha

He can't quibble really, hes punted it on as a 2.8 and it's blatantly not that,
but you dont know if he was sold it as a 2.8 or he has just tried it on

either way, it looks like you'll be doing an M50 conversion or sending it back....

It was sold to me as a 2.8 and I am in the process of sorting this with him.
DanThe keep your opinions on the price he paid to yourself, ash wasn't the only person interested at the price he paid but he was the first to pay I had other users on here give me rough values of the items as I bought them some time ago and the averages were the start price with ash then we came to a deal after a substantial discount.
Regardless of this that engine may have a b25 bottom end but everything else about it, manifolds injectors and the fact it's obd2 told me it was an m52 and as said bought as a b28.

Really didn't want this to be honest, may as well close this thread.

Apologies for dragging in people that aren't involved.
