Hi guys, I'm in a spot of trouble, and id appreciate some input.

Engine is m20.

At idle, there is a mechanical "clunking" sound that appears to
be from the gearbox.

However, the sound immediately disappears as soon as the clutch is engaged.

Apparently, this is common on e30's however unbeknown to me.

Does anyone have potential diagnosis/solutions?

Layshaft rattle!

Indeed they are common problem on the getrag box's. you could try using different gearbox oil to quieten the noise.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Is there an oil that you've tried and tested?

Is there any internal component that can be/needs changing?

I've exported the car so I may not be able to get the rev line oil.

Any other suggestions?
