I've bought a Z4 gearstick an while looking at it i've noticed that there's play in the rubber centre section, now i'm not sure if it's supposed to be there to stop the vibration from the gearbox or if it's a dodgy one where the rubber has shrunk when it set.
Has anyone else noticed this ? as i don't want to fit it to find out it's just as sloppy as the one i'm taking out

Cheers

How much play...?

There is SOME play in all the gearsticks... I noticed this with my Z3 2.8 lever... but I'm sure it wasn't 'slack'.

While just holding it in my hand the top easily moves by about 5mm, so once in the car i should think that will increase even more when under strain.
Is this how they come or do you think it's a duff one ?

Mmmm... not sure. I'd take it back and ask to compare it to another one.

Yeah i was thinking the same thing but you know they won't have another one in stock :x

This is what the underside looks like, i would assume that the rubber would be a tight fit :?

It should not rock like that. You can force it, but there should be no gaps.

That looks proper dodgy, that white flaky stuff is probably the assembly lubricant... the assembly has probably been forced. Even the label looks rubbish!
