I have a 1987 325i Sport in black, although these days its looking rather grey.. I want to change that and make her look brand new again! Although I have no prior experience in wrapping or car painting, anything that gets done I want to do myself.

I would like people's opinions on weather I should go for a full respray or a full wrap. Forgetting about price but taking into account difficulty. Also any info on people's prior experiences with either would be great to.

I'm just really stuck on what to choose out of these two. I guess because I don't know enough about either. Please help me :) Thanks

Had mine resprayed, it was faded but straight. Cost me about £800, but it looks like a new car and I'm very pleased.

(I bought a compressor and tried painting a project before - it looked horrible.)

Good luck...

Where abouts did you get it done for £800? I was thinking it'd be more like 1.5 2k for a pro job? That's the only thing putting me off.

I know a good guy in Stoke-on-Trent. Has been painting Ferraris and Porsches and now starting up on his own. A good chap. Dropped it off on Monday and picked it up Saturday morning. Very pleased - 3 months now and no issues.

He even deleted a car 'phone aerial hole and sorted out a couple of minor small rust bubbles on a wing too.

Let me know if you're local and want to get in touch - he came to visit me at home and gave the car a thorough inpection before quoting. You can have a look at mine too and see if its the sort of job you want, etc...

I told him I wanted a car to drive every day and not a show winner. He said it'd look like a new car and to me it does. Livin' the dream...

You lucky guy. Well I'm not to local (Cambridgeshire) but I'd be willing to travel to get a nice job done cheaply. Is he always looking for new jobs?

If it's a rusty turd that needs all the structural support it can get, then wrap it.

If it's a genuine sport and you want it to hold its value, then spray it.

And most likely budget more than 1.5K if your looking for a good spray job. I have a guy I have used in Ayr for years and he quoted me £1K to paint my cab, but that was me doing most of the prep including stripping all the trim etc, then all the refit.

If the car is straight and the paint is only faded paint correction via a machine polish can give great results. In the end this is what I did.

Before when I bought it, paint was very flat and covered in swirls and scratches, not to mention a million other issues:

If you're def going DIY - wrap it and put up loads of pics so I can see how difficult it is!!!

Worst case, a wrap will/should peel off without ruining any existing good paint and you'll just be left a little out of pocket for having a go!!!
Or it could end up looking good and inspiring some of us!!!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm! I'm leaning more towards a full respray. Does any one know of anyone in the Cambridgeshire / east Anglia / Midlands area who can do the respray professionally. I wouldn't mind doing all the prep work before and after. It'll give me a chance to bring the trim and all its bits back to life. Thanks guys, big help!

I'd respray it personally.

I got a rough quote of £3k for a full inside/outside bare shell respray after having it taken down to bare metal.

It's tempting, but a lot of money!

If the price is right i'll defiantly be respraying now. Will things like chips and small dents need to be sorted out by myself or would that normally be included? I guess it depends on who's doing it.. But yeah if anyone can suggest a professional in my area that would be great.

Personally I would save the cash and get a re spray. But have a real good thorough look for rust first as it would be a shame to go to that length and not get any rot sorted first.

Home resprays can be hazardess.

Had mine polished as the paint was flat, but after 6 months it went flat again. So went for respray.

Why Pony? I'm pretty sure mines meant to be Schwarz, code: 068 but I'm not sure that'll be dark enough. What I'm really looking for is something as bold and dark as this:

Mine is defiantly not that black right now, nor do I think it will be if I was to paint it the original colour.

If it were mine I would want it resprayed in original colour for originality purposes and values

But it isn't so you can have whatever colour you want ?

personly id re spray and be very wary of any sub £1000 jobs , save if need be pay for a decent job, but before doing so- remove the wings and take back and re polyurethane seal all inner arches sorting rust etc 1st (rust will be hiding there) , and get the car sorted before forking out for paint

£800 type re sprays are more a mask everything up bumpers left on and blow a coat of paint over with minimal prep work and in an out in a week (as above) with orange peel and runs and whatever polished out and probably not oven baked , may look good but after a winter or 2 on uk roads issues and bubbling will more than likley arrise, and often done without the above rust areas sorting 1st, which of course is ok if you just want it to "look nice" , but if its a car you long to have in the long term, do it justice, also take note of plenty of for sale cars that have had "a full re spray" a year or 2 ago, to then mention "slight bubbling" issues on arches and whatever :? because they just gave it a bucket of paint and nothing else
