I'm looking into why my heater blower won't work and many threads about this problem mention that the heater blower will only work when on setting 4. The trouble is don't have a setting 4 my heater switch it only seems to have 3 settings (although the numbers on the scale on the dash go up to 4).

I had noticed this before but never really worried about it. Any idea why this is? My e30 is a 1986 pre facelift.

It's still most likely to be the heater resistor, although it could also be a dirty switch. When you select "4" does the fan stop, or just keep spinning at speed "3"?

That's the problem, I can't select '4', the switch does not have a position '4'.

It is the resistor, I took the motor out last night, lubed it up and tested it and it ran fine. Tested the resistor this morning and one of the pins has no connection to any of the others.

Might get myself a new switch, one that has 4 speeds.
