How have you concluded most e30 alpinas are auto from the ones you have seen for sale? I must have seen only about 5 for sale in total in the uk for the past 2 years.....therefore the majority of them (2) we're dolphin grey right

The C1 2.3 and early C2 2.5 in fact had the choice of 3 gearbox's.

It depends on if you're talking e30/e28/e24 or the later e36/e46 etc.
If the latter, the auto appealed to the new buyer as the auto and switchtronic gave the best of both worlds.
Early cars were all down to buyers preference and if most were city types and used their cars as intended (for the commute) then an auto is probably the better option.
When new, an auto was capable of dealing with the power output of the current engine ranges, I believe all that was changed was the cam, it wasn't as aggressive on an auto.
If the latter, the auto appealed to the new buyer as the auto and switchtronic gave the best of both worlds.
